We were lucky to catch up with Katie Schowengerdt recently and have shared our conversation below.
Katie, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
Always a beer drinker, I was more than happy to help my husband and his partner open Two Plumbers Brewery + Arcade. For the first year, I was working as a Dental Hygienist who made business calls on my lunch breaks, and I would bartend evenings and weekends. I worked the two full time jobs for about a year, and once we were able, I left my corporate dentistry life to come onto Two Plumbers full time.
Our brewery + arcade quickly began to receive daily requests for private rentals which we were unable to accomodate while open to the public, so when we needed more brewing space, we decided to kill two birds with one stone and so began our second location / private venue – Two Plumbers Event Space. I run the event space and manage both locations.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Whenever you step into either location, there are smiles all around from people catching up with friends/families, playing board games, or playing arcade games. We provide entertainment and memories, and everyone who rents the private event space has such nice things to say. People always needs a place to celebrate special occasions, and we provide a place where people of all ages can enjoy themselves. We host everything from weddings to first birthday parties.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
We have always benefited from word of mouth advertising – those who enjoy our business tell their friends and family about us. The event space gets more and more inquires all the time from people who attended an event and would like to inquire for themselves. We’ve also had families rent our space for multiple occasions, which is always a compliment.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I used to value things on paper more than my gut, and what I’ve found is that my gut is a good indicator of what to do next. When we would make a decision we used to rely solely on how things looked on paper, but what I’ve learned is that a lot of business is between the people involved. If you build a network and make connections with people you trust, business comes a lot easier. This also works with hiring – we are more apt to train someone that seems like a team player than hire the person with the most experience.
