We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Katie Riordan. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Katie below.

Katie, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?

One of the most meaningful projects I’ve worked on is when I painted my parent’s house for them for their anniversary. It was the first time I had decided to paint a home, which meant a lot to me. I have lived in that house since I was 5, so I loved painting it. I didn’t tell my parents I was painting it for them, but I could not wait to give it to them when I finished. They were surprised and immediately put it up in the house. I have painted many homes and they are one of my favorite things to paint becasue I know how many memories a home can hold.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

I have always done crafts and have been creative for as long as I can remember. I made my first pair of earrings when I was 8 for my 2nd-grade economics project and have continued to make them ever since. After being sent home from college because of the pandemic, I started to get more creative with all my free time. I started making earrings and getting more creative. I also began painting portraits. I started Ladybug Designs Co to share what I make with others.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?

I think the best way to support artists is to shop small. Whenever I am looking for a gift, I always like to go to a small business to find presents. I always love going to craft fairs and markets as well to support different businesses. It is also helpful to share your families and friends who have small businesses becasue you never know what kind of business it can bring them.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?

The most rewarding aspect of being an artist for me is other people sharing what I have made. I have family friends who have gotten multiple pairs of earrings from me and they always send me a picture when they wear them. It makes me happy to know that they think of me every time they wear their earrings from me.
