We recently connected with Katie Miccarelli and have shared our conversation below.
Katie, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you get your first job in the field that you practice in today?
My passion for health & fitness initially ignited after my Dad received a scary diagnosis when I was a senior in college. It hit home for me and it was a total “light switch” moment; realizing that we have one body we all get to call home and we just have to take care of it! So I slowly began making small healthy changes to my diet and, as a former dancer, getting my certification to teach Zumba. I spent the entire day in a dance studio in NYC learning how to format, prepare, and execute a great Zumba class! I landed my first job right out of college teaching once per week at a fitness studio that was 45 minutes away. It was not glamorous, my first few classes had bumps in them, but I kept going. Eventually I started teaching at several studios and I added a Barre certification as well. I’m only sharing this story because what I see with so many successful health and fitness entrepreneurs is that you simply have to make your own way. You have to create a path for yourself and keep moving forward, on your own health journey and professionally!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Today, 13 years later, I am a diamond coach through Beachbody, LLC. I lead virtual challenge groups through a private Beachbody app and we focus on fitness, nutrition, and wholesome health. My clients use convenient at-home workouts and we choose a program that is best for them in terms of length of time, intensity, and style. Afterward, everyone can log their workout within the group so we can keep each other accountable and cheer each other on. Each workout program comes with a suggested calendar to follow, tracker sheets, and fun recipes! My clients also have a choice of three different comprehensive, long-term nutrition plans. Each program comes with an overwhelming amount of recipes and customized plans to fit the needs of every body composition. We also use a daily nutrient dense shake. bars, performance supplements such as pre and post workout, vitamins and minerals, collagen, and a detox program so the choices are endless for any health and fitness goal!
Within the group, I check in each morning and every day has a theme! For example, this summer we have “Make This Monday” which is all about swapping recipes and “Travel Tip Tuesday” to help clients stick to their goals while vacationing or hosting visitors this summer. At the request of my challengers we also have “Work Through It Wednesday” which gives everyone the opportunity to really share what is going on in their lives in a solution-based format. The group bonds so much over these! We keep track of points for participation and engagement and at the end of each group I award prizes to those who were most engaged, positive, or supportive! Occasionally I open up a zoom session for challengers to do their workouts virtually at home TOGETHER and we even have a shared workout playlist on spotify!
I have challengers who have lost over 100lbs and I have challengers who totally improved and changed their mindset. Regardless of the scale of the change or how much transformation we can see, I just love knowing I am adding positivity and inspiration to the world through my work.
If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
I would, but I would have chosen to study nutrition and obtain a degree in nutrition. My undergraduate degrees are in Dance and English. The more I coach and grow, the more I love learning about nutrition, I’m constantly spouting off facts I learned to my husband about the gut microbiome, the immune system, regenerative farming, preventative health tips, chemical reactions within the body, the list goes on! I definitely have a passion for it and I may revisit school in the future!
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Consistency. Showing up every single day in my group and on my social media (except I do unplug on Sundays) in any season and sharing that. Spreading fire to the idea that if she can do it while going through a c-section recovery, so can I. If she can do it dealing with an infant who doesn’t sleep, so can I. If she can stay on track eating healthy while on vacation, so can I. Sharing real life mixed with health and nutrition inspiration makes it relatable.
