We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Katie Mann. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Katie below.
Katie, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about how you went about setting up your own practice and if you have any advice for professionals who might be considering starting their own?
I opened my practice, Curated Medical, about a year ago and there have been a lot of ups and downs! I am very good at my job (cosmetic treatments like Botox and filler) but opening a business was a brand new experience. I have always had a vision of where I want to go, but was having a hard time figuring out what steps to take to get there. Finally, a friend referred me to my business coach, Olenka Cullinan. I was skeptical at first because I had never used any type of coaching service like this, but it has truly made all of the difference! I highly recommend working with someone who can help you take the right steps and connect you to the right people to bring your visions to life. She also helps keep me accountable and on track with all of the different things we are working on at any one time.
Katie, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I became a nurse in 2014. After working in the hospital for a while I quickly realized hospital life was not for me and started looking at other avenues of nursing. I began working in home health, which I did enjoy, but knew I didn’t want to be driving around to patients’ homes forever. During this time, a friend of a friend recommended an intro to Botox and fillers course which I completed in the very beginning of 2016. At the time, these services were not nearly as popular as they were today- I had to beg friends to be models free of charge! I’ve been really lucky and since then the aesthetic industry has exploded and it’s been really amazing to see the growth in not only popularity but also in improvements in treatments and emerging evidence-based practices. I also completed a family nurse practitioner, doctor of nursing practice through Gonzaga University in 2019. Today, I see patients in my own practice, Curated Medical, and provide Botox, filler, PDO Threads, laser, and skincare services. My focus is providing treatments that deliver an impactful and transformative result but don’t look like you “got something done.” I’m a good fit for you if you want to look refreshed, brighter, less tired, happier but want to still look like yourself (the best version of yourself!). I also pride myself on making what can often be a stressful experience feel as calm and pain-free as possible. My clients also know that I am always available to answer questions or concerns and want everyone to walk out of my door knowing they made the right decision coming to see me!
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I had a very hard time finding a physical location for my business that met all of the criteria that I wanted (windows/natural light, specific location, easy parking, etc). I looked at commercial space for a year and a half. There were 3 spaces that I thought were going to be great and then at the last minute they went with another tenant because I wanted to make plumbing changes and they didn’t. After taking a break for a few months, the perfect space came to me! I go to pilates with the leasing agent for the center I’m in. She knew I was looking and came to me one day with the perfect space.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
I think my persistence and work ethic has been the most helpful in my success. When I put my mind to a goal I figure out a way to get there even through setbacks and having a lot on my plate. I just keep putting one foot in front of the other and eventually the pieces fall into place!
