Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Katie James. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Katie, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
From a young age, I always knew that I loved music. I’ve been writing songs since I was in first grade and singing ever since I can remember. Growing up I tried to get involved in as many musical opportunities as possible and ended up joining many choirs to try to get experience. However, for me, I don’t think it was never a question of “if” I wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally, it was always a question of “when?” With that said, when I moved to Nashville for college, that’s when things really started to change for me and I was finally going after everything I have spent my whole life dreaming of!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am from State College, Pennsylvania and I could not have imagined a better place to grow up. I think it was really great that I was able to grow as a person before becoming fully immersed into the music scene, because my hometown does not have the kinds of opportunities that Nashville does. With that being said, I am now currently residing in Nashville for school. To say being in Nashville has its perks is most definitely an understatement! Furthermore, I think that my education at Lipscomb University has really given me the connections to get into the industry and is building the foundations I need to make a living out of my craft. I think what sets me apart from others, besides my songwriting and singing, is my determination. I will stop at nothing to achieve my dreams and I will work day in and day out because this is something I truly believe in. At the end of the day though, I am honestly just so grateful that I took the leap to come to Nashville. It was a really scary thought in the beginning, but my life could not be better! It’s a really incredible feeling to be able to say that you are chasing your dreams, and though the process can be so terrifying, it is also so rewarding.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
There are so many incredibly rewarding aspects of being an artist, but one of my favorites is the impact your craft can have on others. There’s always an exciting feeling when you finish a new song, or play a song live for the first time, but it’s the reaction from the crowd that makes it memorable. I have a distinct memory of when I played one of my songs called “Single And Lovin’ It” for the first time live with my band, The crowd was incredibly hyped and everyone was dancing to the beat. Looking out into a crowd reacting like this just left me with an overwhelming feeling of gratitude and it was also just extraordinary to see how a piece of music can impact someone in ways you never could have expected. Seeing others react to your songs, whether it makes them want to get up and dance or want to call friend they haven’t spoken to in a while, just seeing that something you created has an impact on others makes every rough day it took to get there so worth it.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I’m still in the process of building my audience on social media, but I’d be more than happy to share the insights I have discovered on my journey! To begin, building a foundation from the ground is incredibly challenging and takes a lot of determination. It can be hard when you are constantly looking at statistics and numbers and not seeing much change. However, there are a few things you need to remember. First is once you start getting traction, growth happens exponentially. In other words, it is going to start painstakingly slow, but eventually the momentum is going to pick up and rapid growth will occur. The second thing is that no matter how involved you get with numbers and statistics, make sure you don’t forget. your purpose behind trying to grow your audience. This will keep your passion alive and make it feel like less of a task and something you have to do, and more like something you get to do. It’s all about your perspective! I hope these tips help, but really just stay determined, and eventually you will see the results you are looking for!
