We recently connected with Katie Fee and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Katie, thanks for joining us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
Part of me wishes I had started sooner, but at the same time, I might not have the same people in my life as I do now had that been the case. I moved to Nashville to attend Belmont University in Fall 2017, but didn’t really start playing out of the Belmont bubble, so to speak, until 2021 after graduating.
When I started playing writer’s rounds, I started to meet and connect with so many more artists and writers, so I feel like I may have been farther along in my journey had I started doing that earlier. In the end though, everything works out the way it’s supposed to, so I’ll just be grateful for where I’m at and the people I’ve met so far.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I’m a country singer-songwriter born and raised in Sioux Falls, SD, but I have been living in Nashville for just over 5 years now. Like many other female artists, I have Taylor Swift to thank for my inspiration to move to Nashville and pursue a career in country music, but I also listened to Shania Twain, Deana Carter, and Faith Hill at a very early age.
As an independent artist, I wear pretty much all the hats when it comes to my career. This is great when it comes to creative control over my music, but it does mean a lot of work and effort put in on the not-so-glamorous tasks of running a business as well. I am my own booking agent, marketer, social media manager, merch designer, cover art designer, promoter, and so on and so forth. You could say that I’m very thankful for my degree in Music Business from Belmont University for helping me learn how to understand the business side of the industry.
In the summer of 2021, I released music for the first time when I released my debut EP, “Sunsets and Fireworks” and I’m currently working on putting together new music to release in 2023.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Getting to do music, what I love and am passionate about, is the most rewarding aspect. I get to create projects from the ground up as an independent artist. From an idea myself or a co-writer brings to a write all the way through to a song you can stream on Spotify, as well as beyond when you include visual aspects such as lyric videos and cover art, I’m able to see it through to the end. That process can look different every time, so it never gets boring.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Engage with them on social media, tip artists providing you live music (if there is a tip bucket), buy their merch, stream their music, share their music with others. Anything society can do to help build up smaller artists will help them grow to their full potential.
