We were lucky to catch up with Katie Crouch recently and have shared our conversation below.
Katie, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s kick things off with a hypothetical question – if it were up to you, what would you change about the school or education system to better prepare students for a more fulfilling life and career?
When I graduated High School in 2015, almost everyone I knew was headed to college for a 4 year degree. I always knew I wanted to have a career in the beauty industry, but was told that hairstylists and other beauty professionals could not make any money. I was told that the only way to get approved for loans in the future, have a steady income, or be able to provide for a family was to get a 4 year college degree.
I ended up going to the University of Missouri where I spent three years trying to squeeze myself into the mold that everyone around me fit so effortlessly in. At summer welcome before my freshmen year, I was asked what my major was, and I had truly no idea what I wanted to study. I was entering the University on Academic Probation due to not having a high enough ACT score or GPA. School has never been my thing. I switched my major probably 5 times, and nothing ever felt right. It did not click until after my Junior year that I knew I should not return to school in the fall. I could feel my true passion all along was finally calling my name, and I enrolled in Paul Mitchell for Esthetics. On the first day of school, I remember talking with the girls in my class about makeup palettes. It was like I finally found the place where I belong, and it had been there all this time.
My wish for other young people who do not fit the mold: to not try to be something you are not. Go after your passion and pursue what you are actually interested in. I also wish that this will be fostered by teachers, parents, and other influential figures in young people’s lives. The only way to find true success is to go after what you are passionate about, and a 4 year degree is not the only pathway to get there.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
After working for several years for a large waxing chain, I decided to launch into my own business called Brows Body Face. I specialize in body waxing, all things eyebrows, and lash lifts. I am also planning to add facials to my menu in the coming months.
I am passionate about making people feel beautiful and empowering them to feel good in their own skin. I give 100% in every service and I am always looking for ways to improve and innovate my craft. I want the very best for my clients, so anyone who walks in gets a clean, professional and friendly service.
I think one of my biggest strengths as a business owner is being able to visualize my goals. I can picture the future as if it has already happened.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
In 2019, right after Esthetics school, I tried to open up my own business. I had no clientele, no money to fall back on, and no experience. I truly had jumped the gun on something I thought was going to be a huge success. Just a few months in to opening, I found out I was pregnant with my daughter Parker. I decided that it was best to close, get a job at an established company, and wait awhile before reopening. Although it was gut wrenching at the time, I knew that I would return one day to my business when I was ready.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Social Media marketing is definitely a passion of mine. I love creating content on Tiktok, Instagram and Facebook. My biggest recommendation would be to just make content that you enjoy creating. Do not make content just for the goal of getting views: if you put your passion into something, people will see it and enjoy your content that much more.
