We recently connected with Katie Cone and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Katie thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
As an artist, I have wrestled with this question quite a bit: am I happy? Obviously no job is perfect, and being an artist can come with many stressors: unpredictable income, after-work hours, seeing little to no results from what I do. But I’ve realized not to place my happiness in other people or in my career. And as hard as my career can be, I wouldn’t want a regular job. I know this is where I’m meant to be, what I’m passionate about, and I enjoy helping others with my coaching and sharing relatable songs.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am originally from Golden, Colorado. My mom’s side of the family has always been pretty musical, so I guess it rubbed off on me. I started out learning piano at age five and added violin at nine. I didn’t really start the whole singer-songwriter career until the end of high school. Singing and songwriting were my escape, I spent many hours by the piano late at night just having fun.
After high school, I decided to take a gap year which was definitely a difficult time for me. I wasn’t quite sure what I wanted to do in life although the music was all I had known. I had people tell me music was just a hobby and wasn’t going to “pay the bills”, but over the course of that year, so many things kept pointing me towards music. I really saw how music was so therapeutic for not just me, but others. I loved how sharing my songs, even if they were very specific and personal to me, could be relatable to other people. I ended up going to college as a singer/songwriter major.
During college, I was scouted off of an instagram video and started a development deal with a team out in Nashville.
I had the privilege of writing and recording songs for my debut EP, “Do You Feel the Same?” with top writers and producers in the industry. I just released the last song off my EP called “Wide Awake”.
When I am not doing the whole singer-songwriter career, I am busy voice coaching with my business called “The Vocal Fix”. I enjoy coaching singers across the US reach their own singing goals!

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Throughout my development deal, my mom became sick with cancer. I decided to take time off from my own singing career, to be able to spend more time with her. Little did I know, my mom had three months left to live. I’m so grateful I was able to soak up that time with her, and don’t regret putting my career on hold. Getting back into music a year later has been pretty tough as I was making great strides in my career. However, that experience has taught me what’s most important in my life and to keep pressing on.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I am actually pivoting right now with my singer-songwriter career. I know that singing and songwriting will always be a part of my story, and I will continue to pursue these things. However, I’m pivoting away from the way society thinks a singer-songwriter should be. To “make it” as a singer-songwriter as society dictates, it is not enough to just have natural talent. It is all in the numbers, especially number of followers. A record label wants to make sure an artist is profitable before agreeing to represent them.
While this makes sense from a business stand point, as an artist, it clearly strips the time to focus on the craft and instead points an artist in the direction to become an influencer. It also means more singers get signed who can’t even sing a tune!
All this to say, I know I will continue to pursue my career, but in a way I find still brings me joy while maintaining my humanity. I also hope to encourage other musicians to really reflect on their end goal, and make sure that they are in control of their creative journey.
