We recently connected with Katie Centers & Emily Guthrie and have shared our conversation below.
Katie Centers & Emily Guthrie, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
Being successful takes flexibility, trust and support. Running our site has taught us a lot about ourselves, our interests and how we can focus on our careers and our passion at the same time. On top of working full time, we both have small children – we both have 2.5 year old rambunctious boys. Emily had baby Rea last October and Katie is due any day now with number 2. Life has thrown a lot our way and instead of letting it get us down and having us put our site on the back burner, we’ve learned how to be flexible. Emily’s baby has been going through some medical issues and family being a priority, its meant there is less to dedicate elsewhere. Katie has had days this pregnancy where tasks just aren’t going to be checked off. During those times, we lean on each other and the other person fully understands. We don’t take on projects without both being willing to do more than our share if needed and we always make sure that this site remains a source of happiness for us in our already busy lives. Having a business partner that you can relate to in that regard is so vital.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Emily and I met each other through our husbands, who have been best friends since elementary school. We bonded quickly and went through a lot of major changes in life at the same time. We got engaged around the same time, married around the same time, and in 2020 we both found out we were pregnant with baby boys. Going through the experience of pregnancy and becoming a first-time Mom during a pandemic is wild. You are thrust into this brand-new life caring for a tiny human and learning how to navigate who you were and who you are now. Your schedule changes, your priorities change and it’s easy to become engulfed in this brand-new life as a mom. We talked extensively with each other about how we wanted to make sure that we didn’t lose our own identities during this new stage in life. That’s how we came up with the idea of starting in Life and Littles. It’s a way for us to explore and share information that highlights our own passions and how we incorporate and balance those with motherhood.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
We always want to provide content that is relative to our audience – parents of little ones. So much of our material is centered around stages we are at in life, knowing that others are at the same point. When we were pregnant, we spent time looking up gender reveal ideas, nursery themes, postpartum must-haves… and that’s what we wrote about! When we started baby led weaning with our boys, we were constantly searching for meal ideas – so we starting sharing ours. Time and time again, our content comes from our real life experiences and that seems to resonate the most with our audience. We share what has helped us, what we relied on and what we recommend.
We’re also both active in parenting groups on Facebook and are able to draw a lot of inspiration from there. Parents best resources are other parents so when we see the same questions being asked over and over about sleep training books or product comparisons, we take that into consideration for content.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Our goal has always been to resonate with those who visit our website, read our articles or view our social media. The biggest compliment will always be comments people leave or stories they send us about the same products we are sharing or how we have helped them. Knowing that the effort we are putting in is reaching and helping others is by far the most rewarding aspect. It’s also a bonus to know that others feel passionate about some of the same topics you do.
