Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Katie Cassin. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Katie, thanks for joining us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
My mission at its core is empowering women.
When I started my photography business I was 5 months postpartum, and like most new moms, it was the sum of my identity. My entire life was upside down but I knew what I was doing was important. I looked at my Mom and how, even as an adult, she was still the center of my universe. It became alarmingly clear how Moms are often the unseen heroes in our life’s journey. I became obsessed with changing that. I became obsessed with capturing Mothers with their children. I felt the same stress of all my clients- I haven’t lost the baby weight yet, I don’t have time to find the right outfit, my postpartum hair looks crazy- and yet I wouldn’t let these excuses fly. I knew that 10, 20, 30 years from now their kids would look back at these photos and only see how utterly perfect their Mom is. This developed my mission statement of getting Moms in front of the camera.
Flash forward four years to today- that mission statement has grown even more. I wanted to add to my mission statement- I wanted to offer more to the women in my life so I opened an in home boudoir studio. I thought that being in family pictures is amazing…but we can do even better. Not only are women and mothers enough to be in photos with their children…but they deserve to be in front of the camera all on their own. My studio is about self love and giving yourself permission to take up space and see yourself in the most beautiful light.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hi! Im Katie!
I am the owner of Katie Cassin Photography!
I started my photography business when I was five months postpartum with the mission of getting moms out from behind their iPhone cameras and into the pictures with their kids. Photographs are quite literally frozen memories and I refuse to let Moms go without being in those memories with their children. We get so wrapped up in societal pressures that we forget our children only look at us with love. They don’t care about those last five pounds…they just want to be with you. Moms are everything to their kids.
My goal is years from now when your kids look back at old family pictures they see their Moms in the photos with them.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I think the most rewarding aspect of being a creative is having an outlet to create.
I used to think I was weird because I felt like my brain processed things a bit differently than others but now I use it as my strength. I get to capture the way I see and interpret the world through my camera and it is incredibly rewarding.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I know I mentioned I started my business five months postpartum…but did I mention that five months into launching my business was March 2020?
I felt like just when I started I was finished. The world shut down and I had no idea what to do. I had seen a course being offered by Teri Hofford on how to offer FaceTime photo sessions and I went for it!
Basically I would FaceTime a client and coach them on where to set up their phone and I would screenshot the image and edit them as if they were images from my camera.
Since everyone was quarantined and looking for something to do…it took off. I offered all of those clients discounts to a real session when the quarantine was lifted and most took me up on it which is how I really got my business up and running!
