We were lucky to catch up with Katie Biging recently and have shared our conversation below.
Katie, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
I think my entire journey with my permanent jewelry business has been risky! I fell in love with the idea when I received my own permanent anklet at a vendor market, and immediately began dreaming of creating my own business- I never thought I would actually go through with it! At the time I was working full time as an ultrasound tech and actually contemplating going back to school for my Master’s Degree, but decided to take a chance on myself and put that money towards starting Wild Ember. I had zero business experience and had to learn most things through trial and error, asking for advice from others and doing a ton of online research. A year and a half later I am so glad that I took that risk, it has definitely been a ‘Wild’ ride but I am so proud to say that I went for it.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Katie Biging, and I am the sole owner of Wild Ember, my permanent jewelry small business. I live in the South Bay and I started Wild Ember in August of 2022 as a fun and innovative outlet for me outside of my full time job as an ultrasound tech. I have always loved dainty, everyday jewelry and Wild Ember allows me to tap into my creative side. I decided to take a chance on myself, and after so much learning and experimenting, I am SO glad I did!
What is it exactly? Custom fit, claspless gold filled and sterling silver jewelry that is meant to last as long as you want it to. I offer an assortment of chains and charms that are custom fit to you and hand welded closed, no clasp required! It’s one of the newest jewelry trends and is great for adding a little daily sparkle, effortlessly accessorizing, or marking a special occasion. I like to think of it as more than just jewelry, its an experience! I offer my jewelry services at local vendor markets and boutique popups, as well as private parties for a more intimate and/or celebratory experience.
I am so proud to be one of the South Bay’s first permanent jewelers, and I really focus on client experience. I want every customer to feel beautiful with their custom fit, personalized piece(s) and it makes me so happy to hear when people love it! I also am continually striving to offer the trendiest chains, charms and jewelry designs and always welcome unique, custom requests.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Motivation, kindness and a positive attitude. With my medical field background I have a passion for people and I feel that I would be nothing without my customers! I always strive to be friendly, accommodating and fun, and I treat everyone as a friend- not a transaction. As a lover of everyday, dainty, affordable jewelry I am relatable to my customers and reflect this in my business practices and prices. Lastly, I have always been a self-starter, and I feel that I can easily adapt in high energy, fast-paced environments and smaller, more intimate settings.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Small business vendor markets, popping up at local businesses with similar vibes and values, and word of mouth by having a positive and friendly reputation!
