We were lucky to catch up with Katie Amend Jennifer Dempsey recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Katie & Jennifer thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you think folks should manage their own social media or hire a professional? What do you do?
Four our brand’s social media, we decided early on that we wanted our customers to be able to count on our authentic voice. We value stylistic consistency from a visual point of view, but also think that this consistency equals trust to the customer. She knows what to expect and if she likes what she sees, she won’t just be a one time shopper. Our shop has been a place for customers to find fresh fashion jewelry, outfit inspiration and encouragement with a weekly email newsletter. All of the digital media we create has our unique style and artistic hand.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Espacio started in the Spring of 2018 after we took a creative retreat to San Miguel, Mexico. It was there where we were inspired and encouraged to grow something out of our creative passion. We headed back to our kitchen tables in Houston, Texas and got to work beading one bracelet at a time! We find so much joy in helping women achieve their everyday look by customizing their uniform as they wear our jewelry from carpool to cocktails.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
We started our jewelry business with $1000 in the summer of 2018 with the intent of attracting a few local customers. Little did we know, starting with an online platform like Instagram would set us up for success to be able to grow and reach customers all over the country, not just in our backyard.
Our initial investment was small, but as we grew, production and shipping issues cropped up and we became savvy in pivoting at every turn. The first year of our business was a bootcamp for us but laid the foundation for growth over the years.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Espacio has been blessed with the best customers. We find that friends tell friends about their fashion pieces and we have been the beneficiaries of some wonderful growth via word of mouth. Instagram (in the beginning stages of our business) was helpful in sharing our content with followers and suggesting us to new markets. Lately, however, we have seen as the algorithm changes so does our reach. We have gotten creative and are branching into paid advertisement.
