We recently connected with Kathy Phipps and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kathy , thanks for joining us today. We’re complete cheeseballs and so we love asking folks to share the most heartwarming moment from their career – do you have a touching moment you can share with us?
We were able to assist a mom of three with securing car seats. Our client came into the office due to domestic and sexual violence by the father of her kids. She was afraid to take the necessary steps to get him removed from the apartments since he was not on the lease. She was able to find the strength within to challenge him on his abusive behaviors and express her feelings of wanting to be out of the relationship. Out of spite, he took the truck with the car seats. Our client was very upset, as car seats are expensive. We were able to find an organization with Legacy Community Clinic, Safe Riders program to provide the service. Our client was so happy she just cried. She was able to get three brand new car seats and safely transport her children throughout the City.

Kathy , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
We are a 501©3 non-profit victim services provider for survivors of domestic and sexual violence. We provide case management, support groups, financial assistance, court approved parenting classes and anger management, crisis intervention, youth prevention, assistance with filing a protective order, safety planning, lethality assessment, assist clients with getting furniture at Houston Furniture bank.
We help survivors of domestic and sexual violence safely leave an abusive relationship and know their rights as a survivor and navigate the justice system. What makes our organization different is we also focus on helping the client long after they are out of the abusive relationship through our continuum of care program.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I am a survivor of domestic and sexual violence, and it is my passion to serve survivors in their journey to healing. I was married for 13 years and when I asked my husband for a divorce, he took the kids and hid them from me for two years. Despite the abuse and the isolation from my kids and no social or family support. I persevered and I stand today as a CEO and founder of a non-profit for survivors and have two of my three kids in my life.
