We recently connected with Kathy Fields and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Kathy thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
It all started in high school, back where I am from in South America, where I took a couple of jewelry making classes. There is where I found my love for designing and creating jewelry pieces. During and after high school, I began making simple pieces for personal use. I moved to the United States to better my English and become more fluent in a second language. I began showcasing my work in a couple of craft fairs in the St Louis area. Over the years, I became involved in many more shows, specially art fairs, around the Midwest. I started to include mixed materials, such as copper, silver, bronze, leather and macrame, with the natural South American stones. Today I have been making jewelry and showcasing my one of a kind pieces for over 15 years and every day, my jewelry pieces continue to evolve. I am fortunate to have gotten to where I am today, but the road has not always been smooth. The biggest struggle has been finding the right market of customers over the years. It has been a trial and error with this. I have traveled near and far to find the best art fairs to showcase my work. Every year I apply to new art fairs, as well as reapply to the same fairs I have been doing for 6+ years. I am very thankful to my loyal customers as well as all new customers for supporting me and allowing me to be able to keep doing what I love.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
It takes hard work and dedication to start and continue with the work path you choose. When starting the business there were many aspects involved including what I wanted to create, having the money to start up, and where to sell my art. There were many challenges at the start. For myself, it took a few years to find the right market, and the right customers. Now 16 years later I still feel as though I am still making progress each year.
I am constantly creating new pieces and trying to keep my work continually evolving.
We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
Every year When art fair season starts I send an email to existing customers to keep them informed of my summer show schedule. I also include a link to my website so they are able to see all of the new pieces I have created. I use social media to keep in contact with customers.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I think participating in the same art fairs each year has helped build good reputation with clients. I have a group of shows I do well at and go back to each year. A lot of my repeat customers know I participate in these shows and know when I will be back in town each year.
