We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kathy Chlan. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kathy below.
Kathy, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
My parents did so many things right! Two things that have stuck with me throughout my life – especially when you deal with adversities are : 1. My father would always repeat this to me “Life is like a card game. It is not about the hand you are dealt, but how you play that hand. Play it with dignity & grace.”
2. My Mom would always say “Laughing is so much better than crying. Laugh at life, especially when the curveballs are coming your way.” Both of my parents were very funny and were always laughing. Growing up was like being in a sitcom – so much fun!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

I am most proud of the book I wrote with my disabled son titled “Maternally Challenged – How My Special Needs Son Taught Me To Sack Up & Laugh” – it is available on Amazon. Also all of the TV segments I have done because I can check that off of my bucket list. And who doesn’t love being able to check a goal off!!
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn was the dreaded “Imposter Syndrome”. This is something many people go through and it is when you feel like you are not enough. That you don’t deserve a seat at the table. It is draining and destructive because it holds you back from opportunities! Let’s just say I had this for years until both my sons said two things to me that stuck.
1. What are you waiting for – you make us laugh and can make fun of yourself.
2. You have always told us to believe in ourselves – were you lying to us all our lives?
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
The goal that drives me in my creative journey is very simple – I want to have the least amount of regrets in life. I don’t want to look in the mirror and wonder if I had taken that one road, what would happen. Take every road and every risk given to you. I have known what I wanted to do since I was a little girl. I always wanted a creative career, especially to be on TV and write a book. And I did both. I never thought really “big”, just always trusting that it was gonna be a journey. Embrace it and just trust your gut. If you do that, opportunities will appear. Wear a helmet and just go for the ride!!
