Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kathryne Buckley-Tessem. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kathryne, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
After thirty years of having Joy for a middle name, I finally understood what joy is. I’ve learned to live a life full of it, even when simple happiness isn’t possible.
I developed a podcast, blog, and website all with one purpose in mind – to bring the JOY back to your journey, wherever that may be!

Kathryne, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
After working ten years in the Sports & Entertainment Industry, we made the decision as a family for me to step out of a full-time role (working 60-80 hour weeks) in June of 2019 and begin consulting on a part-time basis for events and non-profits organizations.
In 2020, Joy in the Journey was officially founded and has been a platform for me to inspire and encourage finding Joy in the Journey.
The Lord has given me talents, gifts, and qualities that I wanted to use but didn’t quite know how I would be able to while balancing life as a first responder wife and raising two little ones at home.
My ultimate purpose in life is to bring glory to God in all that I do and that is exactly what I get to do every day.
Saying yes and starting our business, Joy in the Journey has been a blessing in our lives.
I am surrounded by an uplifting community who empowers me to be the best me everyday in all areas of my life. In the words of Billy Graham, “God meant for life to be filled with joy and purpose. He invites us to take our journey with Him.”

How do you keep your team’s morale high?
The advice that I would love to share when managing a team is to adopt a servant leadership mindset.
In all the organizations I have worked with, consulted for, and had the opportunity to serve, the best ones have a leader at the top that truly loves, serves, and cares for their people. It trickles down throughout the organization and creates a culture where people enjoy going to work, love what they do, and work together to accomplish a common goal.
“People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.” – Theodore Roosevelt
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
When I first stepped out of a full-time role to begin consulting, I was mainly interested in consulting for events within the sports industry. And then the pandemic came and all live events, especially in sports, came to a screeching halt.
It was during that time, that I was able to adjust my business plan and was given opportunities to work on virtual events, with smaller non-profit organizations, and consult on a greater scale.
Having to pivot ultimately led to the founding of Joy in the Journey and growing the platform to multiple streams instead of one. It has been an incredible journey that really shows when we allow God to lead, His Plans are always greater than our own.
