We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kathryn Wheat. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kathryn below.
Kathryn, appreciate you joining us today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
In a single word: Resilience
Having the ability to push yourself forward when things get uncomfortable or even hard is a must if you want to find success in any business! There will always be challenges and changes and we must adapt quickly in order to stay relevant.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I became an Entrepreneur about 12 years ago on the heels of a divorce. I had been an avid volunteer for my children’s school, my church and community. Unfortunately, that wasn’t going to pay the bills moving forward. My idea for a business was to be a successful blogger and grow my following. I was cautioned by many about the success/ failure rate of new businesses and told that perhaps I should go get a “real” job. While blogging isn’t what I do now, I realize that it was what started me on this journey. Writing and networking ultimately led me to become a professional speaker, author the book, “Networking: Naked and Unafraid”, start a Real Estate School and become a Realtor. It’s amazing how doors continue to open when you are open minded to opportunities. I believe that having goals is great but we need to make sure we don’t face our goals with tunnel vision. Doors will open and sometimes new is scary, but it’s always worth taking a look.
As a speaker and educator, I’m passionate about helping others see their potential and empowering them to take sustainable actions to help them grow. Having been on the education side of Real Estate for 8 years helped me when Covid slowed things down enough to provide me with the time to pursue my own license. When working with other Realtors, I know what they face. It can be hard. I love helping them achieve their goals and providing them with excellent education choices whether they need Continuing Education or are looking to get licensed. I love being small enough to offer hands on attention but big enough to handle all their needs. I can help Agent with Real Estate education in all 50 states!
Life transitions are challenging and emotional. They’re almost always preceded by major events in our lives. Many times these are emotional events. I am proud that I didn’t give up. Many times we see successful people and think they’re lucky. But in reality, we have no idea what they’ve been through to get where they are or how many times they failed. Be kind to each other. We are all a work in progress.
I believe that God gave me this mountain to show others that it can be moved. My motto is Faith, Family and then Business. When you keep things in that order, miracles can happen!
There are 2 charities dear to my heart because of life events: Suicide Prevention and Autism Awareness. If you really know me, then you know why. If you want to know more, reach out to me via one of my social media platforms. I’ll be happy to share more of my story.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
My reputation means everything to me! I strive to always be my best. However, mistakes have been made along the way. My reputation is what it is because of the mistakes I’ve made and how I’ve handled them. It’s easy to have a good reputation if you never make a mistake. But my mom always told me that only people who don’t do anything don’t make mistakes. So yes, mistakes are inevitable. How we handle them tells the story. If you make a mistake, take responsibility. Don’t make excuses. Don’t try to pass the blame. Instead, put your energy into making it right and learn from it. People will remember how you handled things and have more respect for you in the long run.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Like so many people, Covid almost killed my business. I taught Continuing Education in a classroom. When things initially shut down in March of 2020 my entire business flat lined. Everything on my calendar cancelled. At first I was in shock like so many others were. I cried! A lot! But the same thing inside me that got me up and moving when I started my business, made me get up again and figure out a way to pivot and offer online learning. Me and a few of my instructors dove into Zoom and figured out how to proceed virtually. It was 2 weeks of very long days but we were up and running again! It’s this kind of resilience that you have to have to succeed in business. You will fail at some things. Getting up and making necessary changes to prevent future failures is what is most important. That’s how you grow!
