We were lucky to catch up with Kathryn Sheldon recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Kathryn thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
I was full time at a larger network, as I had been for the first 11-12 years of my career. Any example I looked for, of how I wanted my life and career to look like in the future came from freelance people in the visual world (photography and motion). The path to becoming an executive or manager in an office, was not appealing me. I loved being in the field, working with different people and staying connected to the creative aspect of production. It became clear the only way to accomplish that was by taking the jump into the freelance world, and I’ve never looked back.

I’m a Photographer, Director, and Emmy-winning Director of Photography who brings stories and creative visions to life. After 4 years at MTV and 8 at NBC, I jumped into the freelance world.
My specialty is the culinary and hospitality realm, which includes work with MICHELIN Guide, VICE, The Institute of Culinary Education LUCKYCHOW on PBS, Ipsa + Tom Colicchio, Bread Alone, Atomix, and many NYC based hospitality groups.
Recent documentary and commercial work has expanded my reach through Hulu, Lifetime TV, Wework, Twitter, The Wall Street Journal, Chanel, La Roche Posay, Quixotic Endeavors, and more.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Word of mouth & relationships.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
