Hi Kathryn, thanks for joining us today. Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.
In 2017 I started my fitness career. It really started taking off. I was the girl on instagram promoting this healthy lifestyle but really I was hiding behind closed doors drinking, eating disorders and self abuse. In 2020 I decided to get sober and move to bali. I couldn’t live the way I was living anymore and started posting about my struggles on Tiktok in 2021. My account skyrocketed and many women came forward and could relate. My “mess” has become my message. It is a gift. It is my true passion. Nothing lights me up more than watching the lights turn on for someone struggling —-The more vulnerable and less afraid I am to share my truth – the more others step forward and say … ME TOO. This is when we can help each other. We stop hiding and connect. The more we share with each other and the more we learn, the more we relate the less we judge, the less we compare, the more we will love. 🥰 the more we become free. Free of judgment on ourselves and others.
I think of the many paths I have taken to get here. For me, it was a long road of trial and error, self-discovery, and ultimately self-love. My journey to healing my addictions and eating disorders have been anything but easy. It took me years of struggling and feeling like I had no control over my own life before I decided that I was ready to make a change. Even after I made the decision to stop drinking, there were still a lot of challenges along the way. I found myself questioning my choices, wondering if I was strong enough to make it. In those moments, I had to rely on my inner strength to push through. It’s something I’ve come to appreciate about sobriety—the ability to tap into my inner resilience and strength when things become difficult.
I also find strength in connecting with other people who are in similar situations as me, because it reminds me that I’m not alone in this journey. At the same time, I’ve also found strength in my commitment to fitness. Exercise is an important part of my recovery, as it helps me manage my anxiety and stress. Taking time out of each day to focus on myself and my well-being has been incredibly beneficial. It’s given me the opportunity to take care of my mind and body in a healthy way.
To me, being strong in sobriety and fitness is so much more than just abstaining from drugs and alcohol or hitting the gym. It’s about finding a way to practice self-care and be kind to myself even when things are hard. It’s about understanding that I am capable of achieving my goals, even when it feels like an uphill battle. And it’s about recognizing that even on the days when I struggle, there is still hope for a better tomorrow.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Kathryn Sauser’s journey from a self-described “party girl” to celebrating four years of sobriety epitomizes resilience and self-discovery. For more than a decade, Kathryn’s weekends were characterized by excessive drinking, resulting in regrettable decisions and a cycle of shame.
“Every weekend since I was 14 involved alcohol, and as I got older, it got worse. I would go out on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday,” the 34-year-old recounted. “I’d turn up to my office job with zero sleep; it wasn’t normal behavior.”
At 26, Kathryn’s mental health began to spiral as she grappled with the loss of her father to alcoholism. The grief she attempted to numb with alcohol only exacerbated her struggles.
Transitioning from an accountant to a fitness coach at 27, Kathryn felt a stark misalignment between her lifestyle and the health and wellness principles she advocated. “I didn’t feel aligned anymore,” she admitted. “It was so toxic.”
Recognizing that alcohol was the root cause of her problems, hindering her mental health and self-esteem, Kathryn embarked on a journey towards sobriety. Despite previous attempts at moderation, it wasn’t until a wake-up call at 30 that she fully committed to sobriety.
“I didn’t have a breakthrough moment. I got drunk, embarrassed myself, woke up next to a stranger, lost all my belongings, and that was the final straw,” she recalled. “I realized I can’t live another decade like this; I needed to change.”
Kathryn made the courageous decision to leave behind her old lifestyle and moved to Bali, Indonesia, for over a year. There, she immersed herself in sober communities, primarily online, and delved into sober literature.
“I needed to get away from the party,” she reflected.
Today, as the founder of Sober Fit Girl, an online fitness community catering to the “sober curious,” Kathryn celebrates the profound positive impact sobriety has had on her life, from achieving financial stability to experiencing improved mental health.
“When I first stopped drinking, I was scared of missing out, but now I realize that I was missing out on so much by drinking,” she emphasized.
