We were lucky to catch up with Kathryn Krasovec recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Kathryn thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
I have to say that I can’t pinpoint one risk, but rather a series of many risks that have defined my career. When I auditioned for the Lamont School of Music at the University of Denver, where I completed my undergraduate degree, I was awarded a full tuition scholarship to study vocal performance. I guess that was my first real risk, because I had no idea what I was about to embark upon! My next big risk came when auditioning for Masters programs. I auditioned for all of the major music programs in the United States and after careful speculation, I ended up at The Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. This ended up being the perfect place for me to learn, grow and ultimately perform some key operatic roles that I would continue to sing throughout my career. I was three credits shy of finishing my Masters degree in vocal performance from IU when I was fortunate enough to be one of the Metropolitan Opera competition winners, and accepted to the Juilliard Opera Center within in the same month. That proved to be the next biggest risk as I moved my life to New York City to begin my career. Six years later, I took another big risk when I accepted my first engagement as a fest singer in Germany. I performed as both a fest and guest artist for five years in Germany and the Czech Republic. The next risk came when I moved back to NYC and started my family while continuing to perform. Fast forward to the pandemic in 2020 when I took the opportunity to finish my Masters degree from IU. Going back to being a student after such a long period of time was also a risk, but one that I am so proud that I took . My latest risk has been moving my family from the East Coast two years ago to Southern California, I have been very lucky to have the career that I do, and I believe that much of that has been because I have taken risks. I have jumped into opportunities as they came to me, even though they seemed really scary at the time. I don’t believe I would’ve had near the experiences that I have had as a singer if I didn’t feel comfortable taking risks .
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is that I have the privilege of expressing how music affects me. I get to put a voice to how a piece of Music makes me feel… it just doesn’t get better than that!
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I must say that my resilience, along with my ability to take risks is the reason I have maintained my career!
When I decided to move back to the United States after performing in Europe for five years, it was a huge adjustment and I felt very scared and overwhelmed. It was my resilience that enabled me to put 1 foot in front of the other and re-introduce myself to Opera companies in the US.. I would say the same thing occurred after I had my two sons, I was very resilient and quickly bounced back, making sure my voice was in good shape, and throwing myself back out there!
