We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kathryn Johann. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kathryn below.
Kathryn, appreciate you joining us today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
I named my company Parties By The Sea because I plan events along the coastline in Southern California. I started the company in Santa Monica and built my brand in Los Angeles with clients mostly in Malibu and Beverly Hills. I continued to expand in Orange County and have many clients in Newport Beach. I now plan many events for the reality tv stars on Selling the OC on Netflix and Real Housewives of Orange County on Bravo.
My company name is perfect because I host events at gorgeous homes, hotels and yachts along the Sea.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am an event planner and have a huge network throughout Los Angeles and Orange County. I have a team of models that help promote different brands such as Carbon 38, Love Shack Fancy and different alcohol companies. I produce photo shoots and networking events where we create new content and can create quite the buzz on social media platforms. I think my clients like that I am fun and outgoing but also very good under pressure and make sure every detail is perfect so that they can truly enjoy their parties. I create a gorgeous environment that everyone wants to be a part of.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I started my company in Los Angeles by doing pop up dinner parties. I’m an excellent chef and truly love to entertain, design a gorgeous table scape and stunning floral designs. I started doing dinner parties where I cooked for guests and then expanded into cocktail parties with passed appetizers, bartenders, DJ’s, and it continued to grow. I was gaining a lot of momentum until COVID hit. I wasn’t able to work for over a year and it was of course a huge obstacle for everyone in this industry.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
During Covid, I was living in Santa Monica during the riots and crime started to skyrocket in the area. I decided to move to Newport Beach and had to completely start over with staff, vendors and clients. It was very hard but I was able to produce my own events to show examples of my taste level and show potential clients what I was capable of. I also created relationships with the local yacht and helicopter companies to help provide extraordinary experiences for my clients. I am now thriving and work with the best chefs, florists and photographers and have an incredible network in both LA & the OC.
