Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathryn Coffman.
Kathryn, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Growing up, I was the bullied kid, the outcast with few friends. School was a struggle for me, so by seventh grade, I decided to homeschool, diving into the world of online education as it was just emerging. My parents gifted me a laptop, and that opened up a whole new world! In 2007, I started exploring social media, from MySpace to blogging to YouTube, and later, Instagram. As I watched the digital space evolve, I realized it was something I had a natural affinity for.
Though I started college with a psychology track, aiming to become a counselor to help others like myself, my journey shifted when I landed internships in marketing and communications. I fell in love with the creative process, especially when I realized how many local businesses needed help navigating the new world of social media and websites. I began offering website design services, and almost 10 years later, my business has grown into something I never could’ve imagined.
What truly fuels my work today is helping heart-centered entrepreneurs – those who value authentic connections over vanity metrics. Understanding psychology and the power of human relationships has shaped my approach, and it’s been incredible to see the impact that building meaningful, long-lasting relationships through marketing can have on a business.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road to where I am today hasn’t been without its challenges, but overall, I’m incredibly grateful for how smooth it’s been. The key to my success has been the relationships I’ve built through networking. It wasn’t just about hard work – though I’ve certainly put in the hours – but it was the timing, the people who believed in me, and the referrals that really made the difference. Word of mouth and a solid SEO and social media presence have also helped me grow.
That said, imposter syndrome has been my biggest struggle. As someone who’s battled chronic anxiety and tends to be a people pleaser, I’ve often found myself worrying if I’m good enough or if I’m going to let someone down. The fear of “messing up” is always in the back of my mind, but over time, I’ve learned to look at the evidence: the fact that people keep coming back to work with me and sing my praises to everyone they know is a reminder that I’m doing something right. It’s a struggle that many entrepreneurs face, but the best advice I can give is to trust yourself, acknowledge your hard work, and know that you deserve the success you’ve earned.
Another challenge is navigating the unpredictable nature of business. There’s no real “slow season” in my line of work – some months are incredibly busy, while others are quieter. It’s hard to predict exactly when the peaks and valleys will happen, and external factors like the economy or even a pandemic can shift things unexpectedly! Managing cash flow and having a backup plan are crucial, and I’ve had to learn to embrace the uncertainty that comes with being a business owner.
