Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kathryn Beamon. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kathryn, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
I am a licensed teacher and worked in public education for 13 years. I never dreamed I would own my own business – I thought I would always work in public education. The Science Guys of San Diego is a franchise of the parent company, the Science Guys of Nashville. I first met the Science Guys of Nashville in 2014 and began working part-time for them in 2016. I loved their style of making science fun, and I enjoyed working for them every summer for six years. In 2022, my husband and I moved to California and started the Science Guys of San Diego franchise! Teaching is my passion, and I now I get to teach my favorite subject, Science, every day!
Kathryn, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
The Science Guys of San Diego offer fun, hands-on science programs for children! We offer a variety of science programs including camps, parties, clubs, workshops, special event shows, booths, and more! Our programs are the perfect mix of fun and education. We call it “edutainment!” We show kids that science is fun, cool, and easy! The most exciting part of our business is seeing how much fun the kids have during our programs!
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
As a millennial, I understand the importance of social media to a business! I immediately began building our social media presence after registering as an LLC. Luckily, since we are a franchise, I had access to pictures and media from the other Science Guys branches. I organized their pictures into categories (according to science themes) and began posting on social media. I posted enough content to make it seem like we were already an established business.😊 Once we started booking our own clients, we made sure to take TONS of pictures and videos to post on our social media.
In the early months of our business opening, we had plenty of time to post constantly on social media. However, once we started receiving more bookings, finding time for social media became more difficult. I am very glad we made the effort to post so much content in the early months, since that really helped to build our social media presence!
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
For the Science Guys of San Diego, word of mouth is our most important marketing tool! As we book more science shows, parties, and programs, word continues to spread. Children who had a blast studying Crazy Chemistry in our after-school clubs went home, asking their parents to book a Spectacular Science Party! Students who enjoyed learning all about space during our workshops asked their parents to sign them up for a science summer camp. Parents who registered their kids for science summer camps requested that we come to their school for a festival. As more and more families meet the Science Guys of San Diego, our bookings increase!
