We were lucky to catch up with Kathleen Tolbert recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kathleen , appreciate you joining us today. Too often the media represents innovation as something magical that only high-flying tech billionaires and upstarts engage in – but the truth is almost every business owner has to regularly innovate in small and big ways in order for their businesses to survive and thrive. Can you share a story that highlights something innovative you’ve done over the course of your career?
In a non product driven space, I had to identify a need or area of opportunity that fit my unique skill set. I began curating custom spoken word pieces, telling my clients stories of love, celebration and congratulations. With their guidance, I transformed their life’s journey into art and performance.
Kathleen , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a performance poet, published author and content creator. I collaborate with clients, brands and other creatives to curate one of a kind artistry through spoken word performance, music, monologue or visual imagery. The custom work is displayed across multiple platforms including, plays, video production, ad campaigns and streaming platforms. I am most proud of my ability to translate the vision of a collaborator into poetry. I once created and performed a custom piece for a Hollywood actress I had never met from details collected from her social media. I use the same application for clients who have a specific message to portray.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Word of mouth! Ironically the title of my first book! Professionalism, timeliness and excellence in service established a reputation for my work in this industry. I pride myself on client satisfaction and respecting timelines. Call times are a large part of special event business and tardiness is not tolerated. Respect for the little things, goes a long way.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The biggest reward is completion/ execution of an idea or vision. It can be scary but taught me to preserver and complete what I start. Bringing something to life that will far outlive my time on earth that can be shared and reference by other writers/ creators brings me great joy and pride. I strive to be proud of the work/ energy I put out in all things. Setting that example for my family and children means a lot to me.
