We caught up with the brilliant and insightful (Kat)hleen O’Connell a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi (Kat)hleen, thanks for joining us today. I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
I’m happiest when I’m creating — whether it’s in my studio painting ocean-inspired pieces, experimenting with natural dyes, or teaching a hands-on art lesson with a group of curious kids. Being an artist and creative educator is who I am at my core. I love connecting with kids — literally getting down on their level, showing them how to create something new, and just talking about art in ways that stretch their minds. Honestly, they have the best questions and wildest comments. I learn just as much from them as they do from me. And when I’m in my studio, I bring that spark and experience right back into the classroom — it’s a constant, inspiring exchange.
But I’d be lying if I said I never wonder what it would be like to just have a “regular” job. One with a stable paycheck, health benefits, and clear boundaries between work and rest. I was balancing multiple teaching jobs, preparing for an art show, and managing my website — all while trying to stay on top of bills. One evening, after a long day, I sat in my car feeling worn out and found myself browsing job listings for more traditional roles. I was just curious what it might feel like to have more structure and stability. But then I paused and reminded myself — I’ve been teaching for over 15 years. This is my skill, my purpose, and what I truly thrive at doing. No regular job could replace the fulfillment I get from creating and sharing art. I may not always know exactly what’s next, but I trust that staying true to my path will lead me where I’m meant to go.
So yes, I’ve thought about what a different life might look like. But each time I do, I come back to this truth: I was made for this. Teaching art, making art — it’s not just what I do, it’s how I live. And even when the road gets tough, I know it’s mine
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hi! I’m a multidisciplinary artist and art educator based in California with over 15 years of experience teaching and creating. My work lives at the intersection of fine art, education, and nature — with a deep love for process, storytelling, and tactile experiences. I specialize in ocean-inspired and abstract paintings, natural dye techniques, and teaching hands-on art classes and workshops for all ages.
My journey into this field was never a straight line — I started in fashion and later found myself pulled toward education, where I discovered the magic of teaching art. Over the years, I’ve taught in classrooms, museums, community centers, private schools, and more recently, Montessori environments. At the same time, I’ve continued to build my personal art practice and business, KMOK Art, which offers original artwork, fine art prints, art rentals for luxury real estate, and creative workshops. I also collaborate with other artists on seasonal camps and immersive experiences that blend sewing, surface design, and expressive art.
What sets me apart is my ability to connect deeply — whether it’s with a student, a collector, or a creative collaborator. I bring warmth, clarity, and a unique sense of storytelling to everything I do. I’m not just teaching a technique or selling a piece of art — I’m inviting people into a process of expression and exploration. My classes, especially, are designed to awaken creativity in a way that’s approachable, inspiring, and rooted in natural materials.
One of the things I’m most proud of is the way I’ve stayed true to my creative voice while adapting to the many seasons of life — as a mother, a teacher, and an entrepreneur. My brand is built on integrity, beauty, and accessibility. Whether I’m creating something in the studio or guiding a group of kids through a new project, I want people to feel more connected to themselves and the world around them.
If you’re a parent looking for meaningful art classes, a collector seeking original, soulful work, or someone craving creative inspiration — I’d love for you to follow along, join a workshop, or bring one of my pieces into your space. I believe art has the power to heal, connect, and transform — and that’s at the heart of everything I do.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
At the core of my creative journey is following my heart — my curiosity, my feelings, and my intuition. I approach both my studio practice and my teaching as places for experimentation and exploration. I believe creativity is about expressing your unique voice, not fitting into a mold. That’s especially true when I’m working with kids — I love empowering them to feel proud of their work, even (and especially) when it looks different from someone else’s. I focus on building confidence and self-esteem through art, reminding them that there’s no one right way to create. My goal is always to make art a space of freedom, positivity, and possibility — where kids and adults alike feel seen, supported, and inspired to be themselves.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
A time that truly revealed my resilience was during the period after my divorce. I suddenly found myself a single mother of two, navigating a major life transition while trying to sustain my art practice and teaching career. Everything felt uncertain — emotionally, financially, and creatively. There were days when I was completely stretched thin, prepping lessons after bedtime, managing art sales, and showing up for my students and kids with whatever energy I had left.
But I kept going — not just for myself, but for my son and daughter. I wanted them to see that it’s possible to follow your heart, even when things feel unstable. I continued to say yes to creative opportunities, launched new offerings, and made art that helped me process and heal. Through it all, I built a life centered around creativity, connection, and integrity — one small step at a time.
That chapter taught me that resilience doesn’t always come with loud declarations or dramatic moves. Sometimes it looks like quiet strength, persistence, and showing up for your dreams — and your children — day after day. It’s what has shaped me into the mother, artist, and teacher I am today.
