We were lucky to catch up with Kathleen Kline recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kathleen , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
The biggest risk that I have taken is to open my own gallery. Getting into shows, exhibitions is tough in this region so I decided to open my own gallery. I spent a year researching different locations, saving and budgeting for the right space. I found the perfect location, signed the lease, moved in art, got 4 other artists/photographers to come on board with the gallery. The day that was set as our grand opening was fast approaching and the Thursday before the gallery was to officially open the governor of the state shut the state down for 4 months. It was a frustrating time because I wasn’t sure that the gallery would be allowed to re-open. In the middle of June in 2020 I received word that I would be allowed to re-open with some restrictions. Since then the risk and the wait have paid off because the gallery has grown leaps and bounds and moved into a larger space this past March to accomm0date new artists that have signed on with me and the gallery.

Kathleen , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a working photographer as well as the owner of katsea gallery. I started working as a professional photographer in 1990. The gallery offers artworks in various mediums such as photography, abstracts, representational, surrealist, mixed media, sculpture and silk-art. What sets the katsea gallery apart from other galleries is that a majority of the art that is displayed is “outside the box”, funky, strange and wonderful. I am most proud of the high level of artistry that is displayed at the gallery and that I have many serious and dedicated artists currently on display.
The one thing that I would like potential clients/followers/fans know about the gallery is that art is affordable and that myself and the artists attached with the katsea gallery work extremely hard to deliver unique, amazing one-of-kind art to the public.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is when someone new discovers your work and the absolute joy that comes when they fall in love with one or more of pieces.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I don’t think that there was one particular time that I have had to pivot. I think that as a creative/artist that you are, in some ways, always pivoting. Styles and influences change so I think that “pivoting” is essential as you grow as an artist.
