We recently connected with Kathleen Brown and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Kathleen thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
I’m not sure how different this is from the industry standard, but I like my clients to have a lot of input in their videos. For clients creating personal videos, the final product has to be one they’ll want to share with friends and family, and watch time and time again. Business clients needs are a little different, but they still need to have a product that reflects them, their company, or their industry. The only way I can do that is if I listen to their input.
I listen to what the client wants, and what their goal is for the final product, and ask questions. I’ll ask what their favorite colors are, if they want a theme throughout the video, or if there’s anything that would help me understand their goal.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My name is Kathleen Brown. I’ve been a professional video editor for over seven years. However, I actually got started several years earlier, when I was room mom for my children. As room mom, I took pictures and videos at the various activities and events throughout the year. In May, I’d have hundreds of them on my phone. Not wanting to just delete them, I decided to create videos of the previous year and give them to all the parents. They loved them – and I loved doing them! When my kids no longer needed a room mom, I decided to take what I’d learned and turn it into a business.
Under the title “video editor”, I provide several types of services. At the most basic, I can digitize VHS tapes and some types of camcorder tapes (not 8mm, unfortunately). By far the most common types of things I do are videos for events, such as weddings, birthdays, galas, memorials, celebrations of life, and retirements. After an initial discussion and email, clients send me their pictures and videos. Once I have all the material, I put together a beautiful, personally unique video that you and your family will enjoy watching again and again.
I don’t specialize in the type of videos I create. Some other types include:
1. Actor’s demo reel
2. Sports highlight reels
3. Videos for websites/social media
4. Commercials
5. Presentations
6. School projects
7. Virtual choirs
8. Church services
9. Documentary
10. Independent films
11. Family history interview
What sets me apart from others is that, at heart, I’m a story teller. I love to learn and tell your story! Every video I create, even the business ones, tell some sort of story. I love bringing that story to life.
I love what I do. I love to help people tell their stories; to create beautiful memories; to help them achieve their goals (through demo and highlights reels), and bring in business. Each and every video is important to me, because it’s important to the client.
Question not found
The hardest thing for people to grasp, outside of the length of time it takes to create even the shortest videos, is that it’s more than just “sticking pictures together” and adding music. The pictures and videos have to be put together in a way that makes sense. Music needs to complement the video, not detract from it. Titles, transitions, text, all sorts of little things, that can take a lot of time to create, also add to the overall look and feel of the final product. Anyone can stick photos and video together. Not everyone can make them tell a unique story.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Being creative is in itself one of the most rewarding aspects of what I do. Every video is unique. I may have the same basic template for weddings, birthdays, etc., but each individual video is one of a kind. I love looking for the unique, individual moments that will set your video apart, and tell your story.
I also love the feeling of helping people. It’s most obvious in memorials and celebrations of life, when I help bring their loved one to life one more time. But it’s also when a deadline is looming and I can help get it done on time. Or when someone is looking for the perfect gift for a loved one. I always say I know I’ve been successful if I’ve made you cry.
