We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kathleen. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kathleen below.
Kathleen, appreciate you joining us today. Can you share a story that illustrates an important or relevant lesson you learned in school
One of the most important lessons I learned during my studies to become a licensed massage therapist happened during my clinical training, which was a pivotal moment in my journey. It was a real turning point that deeply influenced how I approach my work today at The Beauty Anatomy.
During one of my first practical sessions with a patient, I was working under the supervision of an experienced therapist. The patient had recently undergone surgery, and I was instructed to perform lymphatic drainage to reduce swelling. Everything was going smoothly at first, but as I worked, I could sense the patient’s discomfort. They didn’t say anything, but I could tell by their body language that they weren’t fully at ease. I kept going, but something felt off.
Afterward, the supervising therapist pulled me aside and asked how I thought the session had gone. I mentioned that it went fine, but she challenged me by saying, “You weren’t fully present. You were focused too much on following the techniques and not enough on how the patient was feeling.” That was a wake-up call. I realized that as important as the technical aspects of the therapy were, it was just as crucial to tune into the emotional and physical responses of the patient. I had to learn how to really listen, not just to words, but to the subtle cues the body gives.
That lesson stuck with me. From that point on, I approached every session with a deeper sense of awareness. I learned that massage therapy is not just about following a set of techniques; it’s about connecting with the client, understanding their body’s needs, and offering support that goes beyond the physical. It’s about creating a space where healing can truly take place, which is why I always ensure that The Beauty Anatomy combines technical expertise with emotional empathy.
This lesson is fundamental to my approach as a therapist and business owner today. Whether I’m working with clients who have undergone surgery or simply offering general relaxation services, I know that providing care requires not only skill but also a deep sense of presence and understanding of each person’s individual journey.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Kathleen, and I am the founder of The Beauty Anatomy, a business dedicated to providing specialized post-operative lymphatic massage therapy for individuals recovering from plastic surgeries. I got into this industry after experiencing a personal journey that truly changed my perspective on healing and self-care.
I started my career in the corporate world, working in marketing and business development. While I enjoyed my work, I felt something was missing—there was no sense of fulfillment. That changed when I discovered my passion for helping people through the recovery process after surgery. Through a personal experience with post-operative complications, including fibrosis due to inadequate care, I realized how crucial proper care and attention are during recovery. I also saw a gap in the industry, where many post-surgery clients were treated as just another case, with no real understanding of the emotional and physical toll recovery can take.
This sparked my journey toward becoming a licensed massage therapist. I studied hard while continuing to work multiple jobs and gain experience, eventually becoming licensed. The more I learned, the more I felt a deep calling to create a space where individuals could not only heal physically but also feel emotionally supported and valued. And that’s how The Beauty Anatomy was born.
At The Beauty Anatomy, we provide lymphatic massage therapy that aids in reducing swelling, improving circulation, and promoting overall healing, specifically tailored for those recovering from surgery. Our services go beyond just the physical—they are about providing compassionate care, emotional support, and personalized treatments. Every client receives a treatment plan that is unique to their body’s needs, and I’m deeply involved in ensuring that their recovery is as smooth and stress-free as possible.
What sets us apart is the combination of scientific knowledge and empathy. Having been through my own recovery journey, I understand the emotional challenges that come with it. We don’t just focus on the physical aspect of healing; we focus on the entire experience, ensuring that clients feel heard, cared for, and supported every step of the way.
I’m particularly proud of the fact that The Beauty Anatomy has become a trusted name in the industry for high-quality, compassionate care.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
Starting The Beauty Anatomy was a deeply personal journey, and funding the business was one of the most challenging aspects of the process. As an immigrant, I didn’t have access to a lot of financial resources or a network of investors. But I was determined to turn my passion into a reality, and I knew that if I truly wanted to make a difference in the post-operative care industry, I had to find a way to fund my business.
At the time, I was working full-time in the corporate world while studying to become a licensed massage therapist. I also worked weekends doing various jobs to make ends meet. My personal savings were limited, so I decided to take a practical approach: I saved every penny I could and carefully planned out my budget. I would set aside a portion of my salary every month to build a small capital fund.
Additionally, I took advantage of small loans and grants that were available to small business owners. I knew that starting small was key to keeping my initial costs manageable, so I focused on investing in the essentials first—getting licensed, purchasing basic equipment, and setting up my business space.
It was a tight process—there were times when I was balancing between paying for the essentials and making sure I could continue my studies and certification—but I remained focused. My own personal experience with the lack of proper post-operative care motivated me to push through the financial constraints. I saw the potential to create something meaningful, and that vision kept me going.
I also sought support from family and friends, who believed in my vision. They helped me with some small loans and moral support, which were incredibly valuable during those early days.
In the end, it was a combination of self-discipline, small loans, and the support of loved ones that helped me get the initial capital to launch The Beauty Anatomy

Any fun sales or marketing stories?
One of my favorite marketing stories happened when I first started The Beauty Anatomy. I decided to take a risk by offering a free consultation for post-operative care, supplies and accommodation tips….. knowing that it would be a challenge to build trust with clients without much of a reputation.
At the time, I was still new to the industry and had no brand recognition, so I wasn’t sure anyone would take me seriously. I put everything I had into promoting the offer—posting on social media, reaching out to potential clients, and even offering personalized follow-ups.
To my surprise, the response was overwhelming. Not only did I secure several clients, but I also gained invaluable word-of-mouth referrals. It was a huge leap of faith, but that initial risk paid off, and it helped me build a loyal client base from the ground up.
