We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Katherine Schultz. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Katherine below.
Katherine, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
This year I expanded my business from Adelaide Australia to New York City, now splitting my time between the two different cities. I have worked as a photographer in Adelaide for ten years and love it but felt the need to challenge myself and grow further. It took 18 months of planning, a rigorous visa process, building a client base in a new city, securing a new home, a new studio and finding momentum all while adjusting to life as an Australian in a brand new city. It’s better than I could have imagined and I equally love both the contrasts and parallels between the two lives now.
Katherine, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I photograph the most beautiful moments in the lives of others. I work closely with my clients to ensure it’s a really comfortable process, too. I began doing this at 18 and built it over time. 11 years later and I still love it as much as I did back then. Over the years I have broadened my business from just working with clients to now teaching other photographers about the craft and honing in on both their style & passion.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Moving countries alone was a true test in my own patience and resilience. It took time to establish a ‘life’ in a new city and doing it alone meant navigating the housing system, banking, taxes, payroll all over again. It felt like learning to become an adult again and it was exhausting for a few weeks. I had overlooked these elements because obtaining the visa itself was hard enough. Once I had the visa, I felt like the biggest hurdle was over. But everything about life in new york was really new and the only support I had was remote (and on a completely different time zone!)
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Treating every client with care.
