Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Katherine Hernandez. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Katherine, appreciate you joining us today. The first dollar your business earns is always special and we’d love to hear how your brand made its first dollar of revenue.
I made chocolate covered strawberries one evening. with no intention to sell. it was around valentines day and I wanted to make some for myself because the ones from the store were not all that. surprisingly they looked good it being my first time and knowing nothing about it. I snaped a picture for Facebook and uploaded it. I received a message if I was selling and I said no. a few days later I made more but this time with sprinkles, took another picture, uploaded it on Facebook and received another message if i was selling, this time I said sure. 3 years later I am going strong with Kats Dipped Treats.
Katherine, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I make custom desserts. from chocolate dipped treats to home made desserts and edible images. As a kid I was always the baker. not sure what really sparked the interest. it is just who I am. I was making chocolate cover strawberries for myself, posted a picture on Facebook and the rest is history, I slowly started adding more items to my menu as I familiarized my self what what to use and what not to use. Thank fully I have had amazing customers. most tell me the theme of their party and give me creative freedom to decorate the treats. I take pride in my name. so every box that walks out my door is a representation of myself so I make sure everything is perfect from visually to taste wise. I think what sets me apart from others is all honesty. some times a customer makes a request for a certain treat and before accepting I give them my opinions on why I might not recommend it. customers really appreciate that.
Can you talk to us about how you funded your business?
since I am an at home baker/ treat maker, I used the funds from my primary employment to fund my side hustle. I’m blessed to have a two income house hold so I had a bit more freedom to focus on my treats. as the orders came in I was then able to use the money from the orders to buy more things for future orders. I’d say it took me a year to finally gather all the tools I needed for my business before I started seeing profit. when you start it is a lot of trial and error so you spend money on things you didn’t need but at the moment thought you did.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I live in the Dallas Fort worth metro area. there is a treat maker at every corner. some times you see other treat makers offer a treat package way cheaper than yours, I can see how a person would be easily discouraged. however there is only one Katherine. others may also offer cake pops, chocolate covered strawberries but they may not have the customer service skills I do. some people are all about the money. you have to really enjoy what you do and not just think about the money. I think that is why I have been successful in this business.
