We recently connected with Katherine De Lay and have shared our conversation below.
Katherine, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s talk legacy – what sort of legacy do you hope to build?
I have been doing this as a business for over a decade and I hope I leave something positive behind once I am gone. All of this started out of boredom and became this machine that I wanted to keep going because it made me laugh and it made others laugh.. or feel special. That’s my legacy, you are special and life is rough so don’t forget to make light during the dark times.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I started crafting at a young age, I always found creating things was a lot of fun.. even if they weren’t the prettiest. I got into cross stitch around the age of 14, to fill time during summers and soon became a way to make small gifts for friends. It wasn’t until I was in my 20s and I stumbled upon Julie Jackson and Subversive Cross Stitch which I loved!! I thought I could take my stitchings a step further and started out with risqué quotes from one of my favorite shows, Mr Show. A couple of years of making gifts for friends, I was encouraged the start a business. So in 2008, I started an Etsy shop and have had it open ever since!
I have had my products on tv shows and featured on articles online on Bust and Cosmopolitan. My items have been on the set of HBO series Girls and on the movie Like A Boss. I have personally made a piece for Judy Greer which whom I love!
I have donated throughout the years to different organizations that touched my heart from abuse victims to relief aids to animals.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
As someone who was raised as a very sheltered life, once I was an adult I was put in situations where I had to reevaluate thought processes. I know that’s vague but I think we all go through things that either stump us or help us grow.

How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
I really do try. I give codes to repeat customers a lot to get discounts
