We were lucky to catch up with Katherine Beggs recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Katherine, thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
Before I knew I wanted to do film scoring specifically, I knew I wanted to compose music in high school. I had done a young composer’s program called “Listening to the Future” in which I wrote original music for the Pasadena Master Chorale, a choir in my hometown. It was my first time seriously composing for an ensemble. We had some amazing professional mentors including Reena Esmail and Shawn Kirchner, both renowned composers. When I heard my original composition for the first time sung by the choir, something clicked in me and I knew I had to keep doing this. I continued to compose, expanding my reach to orchestra and chamber pieces. As an undergrad, I studied music composition. I also became friends with an enclave of student filmmakers who asked me to compose for their films. This was my first time venturing into film scoring and it became something I really loved to do. After doing student films, I realized I wanted to pursue film scoring professionally.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I got into the industry professionally in 2020. During this time, I started shadowing the composer Mark Roos. I worked with Mark for over a year and he invited me to join the team he started with composer Adonis Tsilimparis called Cutting Room Music. At Cutting Room Music, We provide clients with music composition, mixing and mastering, music licensing, and music supervision services. We have scored for a number of films, television, and commercials. What sets us apart from others is definitely our collaborative process. We each have different strengths and we work together very well. For example, I am very good at orchestration. Mark and Adonis are very skilled at guitar and bass. We are all excellent producers as well. Our team is pretty unstoppable in my opinion.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
As a film and media composer, my ultimate goal is to enhance stories that empower marginalized voices. As an Asian-American woman, this is particularly important to me. I am passionate about writing for media and film that is committed to diverse representation. I hope to be a role model one day to other POC women pursuing a career in the arts. I intend to lead the change of the demographics of the industry and pave the way for more diverse voices.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of my creative journey is when someone tells me that my music moved or inspired them. There honestly isn’t a more gratifying feeling in the world. That is really why I am doing this and why I love music so much. If people can connect with my music in a meaningful way, I know I’ve done my job.
