We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Katherine Adkins a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Katherine , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
When I work on a series of paintings, I enter the process with unnamable convictions, which will unravel and reveal in the years after completion. If I wait to have the true meaning solidified before making, the passion and urgency will fade and transition into a different message.
Katherine , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a deeply passionate painter. The brush marks I leave behind on canvas are future messages to viewers. Through frenetic doing, I hope the vibrating patterns in my paintings will serve to connect and remind viewers of my and their pulsating life force.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I just finished reading through Joan Mitchell Foundation’s “Career Documentation for the Visual Artist.” This PDF touches on the mystery of making space and archiving your life’s work, which had always been a logistical puzzle to me.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
