We were lucky to catch up with Katherin Mendez recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Katherin, thanks for joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Leaving behind my pursuit of a career in psychiatry during my college years to embark on the journey of starting a mental health social club was a pivotal moment for me. At the time, I had no concrete plan or structure in mind for what the club would entail. All I knew was that my belief in my ability to make a meaningful impact outweighed any fear of failure.
The decision was not made lightly. It involved years of meticulous research and studying various social clubs with different initiatives. Despite the uncertainty, I was driven by a strong desire to provide a service that could positively impact others’ mental well-being.
As the concept of my social club began to take shape, I realized the enormity of the risk I was undertaking. It felt almost surreal to be in the process of learning how to deliver psychoeducation and directly connect people to wellness resources.
This journey has been transformative, not only for the community I serve but also for myself. It has been a journey of self-discovery, reawakening the acknowledgment of my own resilience. Coming from a background of domestic violence, I could have easily been a statistic. However, I emerged from those challenging circumstances with a determination to succeed, accomplish my goals, and most importantly, to help others.
Taking this risk has reaffirmed my belief that helping others is my true calling. Despite the uncertainties and challenges along the way, I would make the same choice over and over again.

Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
I firmly believe that the core of success in any field lies in a deep-rooted desire to uplift and support others. There’s a profound joy in witnessing the achievements of those you’ve helped along the way, a feeling that transcends personal gain. This joy, coupled with a relentless pursuit of knowledge and a passion for teaching, forms the bedrock of a fulfilling career.
Life, in its essence, is a continuous journey of learning and growth. However, as we transition into adulthood, the structured paths of formal education and training start to fade away. It’s during this phase that we must actively seek out opportunities to deepen our understanding of the human mind and our place in the world.
In this pursuit, discovering our purpose and mission becomes paramount. It’s about realizing that our unique talents and insights are not just for our benefit but are meant to be shared with the world. This understanding brings a sense of clarity and direction, guiding us towards making a meaningful impact in the lives of others.
Ultimately, having the unwavering belief that the world can be a better place because of what we have to offer is a profound blessing. It’s this conviction that drives us to share our gifts with others, knowing that each contribution, no matter how small, has the power to create positive change in the world.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
My approach has been twofold: first, I’ve prioritized offering tailored services to fellow pioneers in my field, whether they’re businesses or individual consumers. Second, I’ve placed a strong emphasis on personalization, ensuring that every interaction resonates with authenticity and care.
Central to my strategy has been the cultivation of a community-centric ethos, emphasizing to my audience that they are the driving force behind the project’s evolution. By presenting mental health concepts in an accessible manner, I’ve fostered an environment of trust, growth, and collaborative endeavor.
Moreover, I’ve fostered a culture of collaboration among community members, facilitating mutual support and propelling their respective ventures forward. Lastly, I’ve embraced technology and entertainment as tools to enhance mental wellness, leveraging their potential to engage and uplift.
