We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Katharine Hudson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Katharine below.
Katharine, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I began singing at a very young age, and was so blessed to have my parents encourage me to pursue that passion. I think one of the first times I sang on stage, I was 3 or 4 and sang a little song from O Brother Where Art Thou at a local Bluegrass festival! My mom is a beautiful singer and musician and she would always perform with me at church or local coffee shops growing up. Those are truly some of our most precious memories. She told me some great fundamentals growing up, and I’ve always loved to try and emulate some of her stylistic elements.
I don’t think I would ever have wanted to speed up the learning process. I think one thing people forget about the arts, it’s not a sprint, it’s a lifelong marathon. Your craft evolves with you through your life, and different media speak to you and help you at different times. Never rush it.
The most essential skill is to be an absorbent and active learner. Sometimes the smallest encounters, or events can trigger major shifts in your career. Just be along for the ride and try to gain the most you can from every experience.
If you try to learn from everything you encounter, there are never truly roadblocks, more just stop signs. When you reach a moment where you feel stuck, look around and try to learn the lesson that was placed before you to put you on a new path.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m a singer, songwriter, and actress from the little town of Williamsburg, Kentucky, in the heart of the Appalachian foothills. I grew up on old country music, bluegrass, gospel, classic rock, and soul music. Those are the roots I carry into my work and try to honor in my music. Performance and writing are incredibly cathartic for me and allow me to tap into emotions and experiences I’ve had and dissect them. In my opinion the creative arts really allow for a safe space for healing and connecting with others.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding thing about being an artist is creating a space for your viewer to connect with emotions they may not have even realized they resonated with. When someone is able to hear a song, or see a performance and connect with something deep within it. Deep down most of us feel the same deep emotions and desires in our life, the need for love and connection, freedoms, expression, meaning. When you create a piece that allows someone to feel that with you, even for just a few minutes, it’s incredibly rewarding.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I’m very passionate about my community, and about the people of southeastern Kentucky. It’s a really beautiful culture that rarely gets the recognition it deserves from history or the media. My mission with all of my work, is to one day be in a position to give back to the people who inspired me to become the person I am today.
