We recently connected with Katelynn Ostruszka and have shared our conversation below.

Alright, Katelynn thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.

The biggest business risk I took was when I quit my high-paying 9-5 corporate job to pursue my passion for interior design. Sometimes we have to choose to play it safe or take a risk. I choose to get out of my comfort zone. I decided to take the risk because of the strong urgency I have to create a life I love and to only focus my time and energy on the things that truly make me happy. To be honest with you, it isn’t always easy. There are times the little voices in my head get the better part of me, but I stay the course and keep my eyes on the prize. I’m thankful for this new chapter and humbled by all the lessons I have learned so far on this journey. Big dreams take a lot of work and often require us to push ourselves past our comfort zone.

Katelynn, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

I’ve always understood the profound impact that our environment has on our well-being. From an early age, I recognized the importance of well-designed spaces and how they nourish our souls. Our surroundings shape our reactions, emotions, and memories, influencing every aspect of our lives.

I firmly believe that a beautiful home forms the foundation for a beautiful life. When we invest in our homes, we invest in ourselves, cultivating a sanctuary that supports our growth and happiness.

Design, detail, and organization have been my lifelong passions, integral to everything I undertake. When I find myself in an environment that nurtures my soul and ignites my imagination, I can truly unleash my best and most creative self.

I’m convinced that this holds true for everyone. Design possesses an incredible power, shaping the way we work, live, and love. It has the ability to transform our daily experiences, enhancing our overall well-being.

What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?

I have always had a love for design and creativity; however, my background is in Digital Marketing. Over the years, my career had become more and more technical, lacking the creative outlet that I craved. I decided it was time to create more joy in my life, and I enrolled in the Interior Design course at the New York Institute of Art & Design.

My interior design career began by working part-time in the industry as a side hustle creating e-design projects and 3D renderings – all while keeping my full-time corporate position.

I had always hoped to have my own business someday, but it wasn’t until my maternity leave that I realized that “someday” needed to be now. Becoming a mother really put into perspective what truly matters in this world, and I realized life is too short to not go after your dreams wholeheartedly. I’m so grateful and humbled to be where I’m at today – doing what I love with who I love.

Fun Fact! My business name is inspired by my family. It’s a combination of my name and my husband’s. Family is extremely important to me and at the center of everything I do, which is just one of the many reasons why I love creating beautiful, functional spaces and helping others thrive in their home environment.

Let’s move on to buying businesses – can you talk to us about your experience with business acquisitions?

During my time in school, I stumbled upon an intriguing opportunity with Decorating Den Interiors. Curious about what it entailed, I decided to fill out the information and explore more about the company. To my surprise, I learned that Decorating Den Interiors is a franchise. Now, I wasn’t quite sure what being part of a franchise meant, but I figured I’d give it a shot and hear them out.

After undergoing a thorough three-month vetting process, I realized that this was the ideal opportunity for me. The best part is that I have the freedom to run my business in my own unique way, while receiving valuable support from the larger company. Decorating Den Interiors specializes in helping individuals establish their own interior design business from the ground up. They also offer guidance on how to improve the operations of existing businesses through proven systems, tools, and the backing of a national company.

From the moment I expressed interest in purchasing the franchise to the launch of my business, it took approximately three months. Once I joined the team, we embarked on a comprehensive two-week training program that equipped us with everything we needed to hit the ground running. The training was robust, and I can confidently say that it prepared me well for this exciting new chapter.
