We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Katelynn Corll. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Katelynn below.
Hi Katelynn, thanks for joining us today. Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
I was incredibly fortunate growing up, because I’ve been surrounded by music for as long as I can remember. All three of my older brothers started taking piano lessons at a young age, so all I wanted to do was learn, too! I was able to start taking piano lessons myself when I was 5, and I just fell in love with music even more from that point on. I dove into drums, guitar, bass, and vocals in the coming years! My parents have always been so incredibly supportive of my music career, even to the point of my dad managing my first band I started when I was only 11 years old. I feel like I started my career at just the right time, and it’s all because of them. If they weren’t so willing to help me acquire shows and drive me to gigs, rehearsals, and lessons…I wouldn’t be where I am today.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a freelance touring/session drummer, bassist, multi-instrumentalist and songwriter based out of metro Detroit, MI. I am a proud artist with sE Electronics, Aquarian Drumheads, and Orthopedic Drum Thrones as well! For most of 2020-2021, I toured and performed both nationally and internationally drumming for indie/pop artist Chloe Moriondo, and am currently working with Nashville based band of Michigan natives, “The Accidentals.” I have been incredibly fortunate to have performed on ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’, ‘The Late Late Show with James Cordon’, as well as a radio performance for BBC Radio at Maida Vale in London, UK. The start of my career truly came from hustling as much as I could, all the time. As I began to brand myself as more of a “hired gun” in the music industry, I really wanted artists to see how hard I was willing to work, and how much passion I have for collaboration and music as a whole. In most cases, my work comes from bands needing a fill in musician for a tour/couple of shows, or a musician willing and excited to get on the road and tour heavily. A call can come in at any time, so I’m always on my toes! It’s incredibly thrilling getting to constantly work with different artists among dozens of different styles of music!
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
The best thing you can do right now is attend local shows, and buy merchandise directly from the artists! Merch sales are such a massive percentage of income for touring artists, and it is INCREDIBLY hard financially to tour right now, not including the physical and mental toll it can take as well. Buy a t-shirt, go see a show at one of your favorite smaller venues, and give them a shoutout online afterwards! It’ll only add to your concert experience as well – you’ll have a souvenir to hold onto when the show is done!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is being able to share a part of yourself in your art. There is nothing quite like playing your butt off, giving that stage everything you’ve got, and seeing the impact you have on the fans and friends attending. Hearing the audience sing along is also such an indescribable experience. The goal of music is to connect through shared emotions, so when you can feel the energy given back to you by the crowd, you know instantly that you’ve done just that.
