We were lucky to catch up with Katelyn Patty recently and have shared our conversation below.
Katelyn, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
It all started when I was in 5th or 6th grade and I got my first video camera. I would always make music videos with the neighbor kids and do their hair and makeup with my little makeup kit from Costco. Any chance I could, I loved doing my friends makeup. In high school I was always so interested in all the MAC makeup when I’d get it done for the school dances. Then I decided to pursue it when I was in college and was trying to figure out what I wanted to do. I ended up moving to Los Angeles in 2015 and went to Makeup Designory school and started my makeup career and I never looked back.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Since I started my career in 2015, I got into the industry when I went to Makeup Designory and learned from my teachers who were in the industry. I then started assisting and then decided to also get my Cosmetology license for hair. I didn’t end up liking the color hair services as much, but I did like styling hair, which I also do, I then started working at a beauty bar called Blushington and after that another beauty bar called Pout and met so many amazing artists and learned so much there. The problems that I solve for my clients are to enhance their natural beauty and to elevate the way they feel about themselves. I always love the reactions I get when they see their finished glam. I am most proud of myself for moving away from my hometown and pursuing my dreams of becoming a professional makeup artist. I have always been more on the shy side growing up and pursuing this job has really made me get out of my comfort zone and show me that I can accomplish anything I put my mind to and has given me a lot of confidence! The main things I want my clients and supporters to know about me is that I absolutely love what I do and that will reflect in my work and the way you feel when you get glammed by me.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
Something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about my journey as a creative, is that it’s hard to not compare yourself to other artists or feel a little down when you don’t have as booked of a week or month as you had hoped. As a creative and a freelancer, we have to really hustle and make our own schedules and don’t work 9 to 5 jobs. Every artist has their own unique style and your style may not be for everyone and that is okay! Everyone’s journey is so different and there is no need to compare yourself to anyone else. I felt it was hard to understand that in the beginning of my career, but you learn that there is no one else like you and no one can ever be you. Another thing is we get to learn so much from other amazing artists and supporting each other. Over the years, I’ve really found amazing and supportive friends in the industry and when you find those people, keep them close! It’s so important to surround yourself with people who want you to succeed and vice versa.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
A particular goal driving my creative journey is to just keep going and to never give up. I feel like a lot of people want instant gratification nowadays and start to give up when things don’t come easily. I strive to keep hustling and be grateful for every opportunity that I receive. I also want to keep learning and keep up on new skills for my artistry.
