We were lucky to catch up with Katelyn Moon recently and have shared our conversation below.
Katelyn, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you come up with the idea for your business?
It was a year into the pandemic and I had been reading more and more the past couple of years. Instagram is one of the social media platforms I use the most. I had created an account for my dog and was having fun with that. I thought it would be fun to start a book account where I could share my love of books with the world, keep track of books I’ve read and find additional book recommendations. I started my account on a whim on a Saturday afternoon. I didn’t even realize there was a whole book community already on bookstagram, but it was such a welcoming community. The rest is history.
Katelyn, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’ve always been a reader. I would read multiple books a day over summer breaks from school. I was the kid who won all the prizes at the library reading program. I lived for the scholastic book fair. I started a bookclub in middle school (and dragged a friend to join me so it wasn’t just me and the librarian). I’ve always loved to read. I got away from it for awhile in high school and college when I was busy. In 2018, my husband encouraged me to buy a kindle and get a library card since I’d been wanting to read more. A few years after that is when I started my bookstagram account! It’s truly something anyone can do if you’re passionate about it.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Be yourself! Social media can bring a lot of pressure on the # of followers or the # of likes. Pick your niche and there will be people who support as long as you’re authentically yourself. Considering I started a book club in middle school and it was just my friend and the librarian… knowing there’s all these followers that support me reading but are also readers themselves makes me so incredibly happy.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Building credibility comes naturally when you’re honest. That also means being vulnerable and sharing book reviews of books you DIDNT like. Engaging with followers and making meaningful content.
