We were lucky to catch up with Katelyn Kremlacek recently and have shared our conversation below.
Katelyn, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Almost all entrepreneurs have had to decide whether to start now or later? There are always pros and cons for waiting and so we’d love to hear what you think about your decision in retrospect. If you could go back in time, would you have started your business sooner, later or at the exact time you started?
If I could go back in time, I definitely wish I would have started sooner. I did not realize just how much opportunity there is on social media with content creation. I recently started taking this seriously within the last two months. I worked in retail management for about 4 years before this and have been a stay-at-home mom ever since. The first store I was working at ended up closing and I had my first baby around that time. Then I ended up transferring to a different location, which also ended up closing about a year later and about the same time I welcomed my second baby. After losing my job for a second time, I decided I was destined to be a stay-at-home mom. I started a dog Instagram account for fun and to share puppy pictures of my dog Oakley, and then found a love for bringing animals into my home. I now have two kids, four dogs, three bunnies, and 11 chickens. I thrive on the chaos and quickly found a passion for sharing our daily life, especially with dogs, on social media and creating content that inspires others. As I continued to grow on Instagram, I also started to realize how much greater of an impact it had outside of the supportive dog community.
When I started taking social media seriously as a business, I had about 9k followers. I gained a lot of knowledge and dedicated so much time to learning as much as I possibly could in that first month. It was then that I realized I should have started this a long time ago! It isn’t about the number of followers you have, but the quality of content. I was under the impression that I need to have thousands and thousands of followers to start earning an income from social media; however, that is not the case! I don’t think I would change anything about my experience though. I am happy with the timeline of when I started diving into content creation and I feel like I started at a time that made the most sense for me.
My advice to anyone is if you’re thinking about doing something… do it! Having more time to learn, grow, improve, and experience trial and error is never a bad thing.
Katelyn, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a typical millennial dog mom. I started an Instagram in 2020 for my dog Oakley and have added three more dogs into the mix: Peanut, Luna, and Pepper. I have my hands full, but my heart is fuller! I enjoy showing all aspects of owning dogs because I believe there is too much perfection shown on social media. I co-host on our podcast called Honest Dog Moms where we really dive into the reality of being a pet parent.
Being a content creator on Instagram, I create a variety of content, ranging from photography to short-film video, for pet brands. What sets me apart from others is my unique creative style and ability to be different when it comes to creative concepts! I have so much fun coming up with ideas and brainstorming the best way to execute those ideas. I am really proud of my creativity, editing skills, and work hard to create content that is different. I specifically love creating helpful content such as tips, ideas, product alternatives, and more.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I built my audience on social media by being consistent with posting content, focusing on relationship building, engaging with brands and followers, and just being me. I think that’s the most important thing you can do when starting on social media is being yourself and also finding something that sets you apart from others and gets people’s attention. For example, I personally have favorite accounts on Instagram and Tiktok that I seek out for a specific reason. Whether they share funny stories, tips, or relatable content, I seek out their content for a reason. So, I try to keep that in mind for my own account. I want to give people a reason to specifically search my page every day, watch my stories, and catch up on my content.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
The mission that drives my creative journey is that I don’t want to climb corporate ladders. I also have never really been drawn to any specific occupation which has led to me feeling stuck and like I don’t want what I am meant to do. I felt like I wouldn’t be happy working a 9-5, so I needed to find something different. This really pushed me to start learning more about content creation, putting myself out there, and utilizing my creative abilities. Being my own boss allows me to have flexibility and control over my schedule, which allows me to be more present with my kids, my dogs, and my family. I would love to continue growing up social media presence, improving my content creation, and eventually turning this into a full-time job rather than a side hustle.
