We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Katelyn Hall. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Katelyn below.
Katelyn, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about your team building process? How did you recruit and train your team and knowing what you know now would you have done anything differently?
So I built Golden Haus in May of 2021 on just myself and an assistant! A big Salon Family is always the goal, we just have to take everything one step at a time! I actually hired my first full time stylist in January of 2022. This was a friend/coworker from a previous salon. Having Roxy by my side is just truly telling of how making those relationships strong from the beginning could always benefit you in the future! After I got back from Maternity leave in March I then hired my next assistant. My goal was to find someone that was hardworking, strong minded, passionate, and ready to slay some amazing hair. I am completely honest with everyone I interview in that I need someone that’s willing to work as hard as me and play as hard as me! I want that fun work environment but I also want that “let’s kick this day in the behind” type attitude lol! I’m always looking for the best! That led me to Amber, and now Abany! I’m looking to continue to build my team! All my girls are hard workers and wouldn’t trade them for anything!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
In 2016 I graduated hairschool, found my salon home and worked there for the next 4.5 years. I built such a strong foundation for myself there, I knew it was time to spread my wings and open up my own space! I opened Golden Haus in May of 2021. What I didn’t know is that I was actually pregnant and opening a salon! Woooh! In typical Katelyn fashion, let’s just take the bull by the horns and let’s start a business and grow a baby! Insane! I was insane and worked extremely hard until my son was ready to make his way into this world! I literally went into labor after my last client and last day in the salon! Taking 2 months off was honestly one of the hardest things for me. I love what I do so much I knew it would be extremely hard. I hired Roxy, a full time blonde specialist in January of 2022. Amber as an assistant/future stylist in March of 2022. Now, Abany in October of 2022. Golden Haus is only a 150 sq ft Suite! I’m currently looking for a bigger space for my girls and all of our amazing clients! January is my goal to find the most perfect space for you guys! Golden Haus specializes in Luxury. We provide the most luxurious services every step of the way. Custom Blonding and Hair Extensions are our main focus and we bring light and some of the best conversations to everyones appointment. All of my clients are like family and that’s honestly something I value the most!
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Hah! This is a good one! So I opened my salon with my first ever assistant from my last salon. It was so exciting that I think I let a lot of red flags slide. That situation didn’t end the way we planned and landed me 8 months pregnant double and triple booked by myself for the next 1-2 months working by myself. Even though this was incredibly inconvenient I was reminded that I am incredibly strong and that one negative moment doesn’t define me and what I want my business to be. I learned so much from that moment. I decided to make it a positive experience. Build my business as best as possible, learn from the situation, become better, and to never settle!
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
So I’ve learned a ton about this from podcast and other stylist friends. You have to figure out what your target clientele is. I want lifer clients. I want clients that value their hair and make getting their hair done one of their most favorite priorities. I want a client that enjoys hanging out at their hair appointments and that respects my knowledge and time! So most of my audience are friends of current clients referrals. But the ones that aren’t I’m working, myself, to find that perfect clientele. Follow EVERYONE and I mean everyone on social media that inspires you and that you want in your chair!
