We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Katelyn Fisher a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Katelyn, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you think folks should manage their own social media or hire a professional? What do you do?
My social media (specifically instagram) started out as a tool to show off my favorite makeup looks I’ve done. As I kept posting, I started getting more work through others seeing my posts. Instagram shifted from a place of fun to business as my work progressed. I still manage my own account (sfx_by_katelyn), but I had to start posting with a different purpose in mind. I love being able to post my own content and now even manage social media for other local businesses in the area.

Katelyn, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a self taught special effects makeup artist. I love how blood, guts and gore can help elevate a film or music video, when used correctly. I first started in the film industry just as a sfx makeup artist, but then started dabbling in production design, screenplay writing and directing. I’ve worked on book cover shoots to rap music videos, and everything in between. Something that sets me apart is my ability to be precise and quick in my artistry. I love how fast I can transform an actor into something horrific and fun. Meeting fun, new people who are likeminded and creative on set is what I live for.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Most of my clients have come from networking. A normal day at a local coffee shop turns into talking about film and projects. I’ve found some of my favorite projects just by meeting the right people at the right time. Then, those clients who I’ve fostered relationships with go on to tell others about me. Another successful avenue for personal growth of my clientele has been growing my social media and following people who are likeminded.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
My all time favorite thing about my creative journey is when I finish a makeup look for whatever project or shoot I’m working on is hearing the “Oohs and Aahs”. I’m a sucker for that. I love rolling up to set with my cutesy, glittery makeup supplies and then creating something creepy and gory. Hearing the response from the director and crew when they love my work is so rewarding. I love being able to work with others to have their vision come to life.
