We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kate Shelton. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kate below.
Hi Kate , thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory of how you established your own practice.
The story of starting Tonic Spatique is one of passion, perseverance, and learning through experience. After a few years in the spa industry, I worked my way into several management positions. These roles gave me invaluable insights into running a business, from managing staff to understanding operations. I was later headhunted for a larger management position, overseeing a more extensive team. This was a pivotal step in deepening my knowledge of the industry and business strategy.
The turning point came when I had the opportunity to attend an advanced business school program—a condensed “mini MBA” completed in under a year. This program was laser-focused on creating a comprehensive business plan, with guidance from industry leaders and financial professionals. It laid the foundation for what would become Tonic Spatique.
When I launched, it was in a small sublease within an established business. Rapid growth soon made it clear I needed my own space. Early on, I had a business partner, but our visions didn’t align spiritually, financially, or ethically. It was a challenging but ultimately valuable lesson. That experience taught me the importance of independence and the need to trust my instincts.
For five years, I operated as a solo owner-operator, gradually expanding my services and client base. During this time, I also launched my plant-based skincare line, focusing on small-batch, botanical formulations. This essentially became a second business that complemented my spa services, providing products for treatments and retail.
Before COVID, I had a fantastic staff member whose departure left big shoes to fill. Unable to find the right fit, I worked alone for five years, managing every aspect of the business and product line. I admit, my headstrong independence made it difficult for me to ask for help, even when I knew I needed it.
Recently, I’ve been fortunate to welcome a wonderful spa therapist to the team. Her skills and passion have been a tremendous support, allowing me to refocus on my skincare line and other aspects of the business I’d put off. She’s not only great with clients but also enhances the retail experience, and our partnership feels like a perfect blend of talents.
For anyone considering a career in the spa industry—whether as a solo esthetician or a boutique salon owner—my biggest advice is to find your niche and build around it. Conduct thorough market research: understand your local population’s needs, the market saturation, and their disposable income. Be realistic about your financial goals. Running a business is costly and time-consuming, and it often takes years before profits reflect the hard work you’ve put in.
Most importantly, let it be a passion. If your business drains you instead of inspiring you, it’s time to pivot.

Kate , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m K8 Shelton, the owner and heart behind Tonic Spatique, a boutique spa rooted in botanical skin care and holistic wellness. My journey into this industry began with a deep love for nature, aromatherapy, and the transformative power of touch and connection. As an esthetician, spa therapist, aromatherapist, and herbalist, I’ve blended these passions into a practice that feels as much like an art as it does a calling.
At Tonic Spatique, we offer more than just facials and massages; we curate personalized treatments designed to help clients feel seen, nurtured, and restored. Our signature offerings include customized facials, therapeutic massages, and natural, handmade skin care products that reflect my commitment to using high-quality, botanical ingredients.
What sets us apart is our focus on truly listening to our clients’ needs and creating a serene space where they can relax, recharge, and reconnect with themselves. Whether it’s addressing specific skin concerns, relieving stress, or helping someone carve out moments of self-care in a busy life, my goal is to leave every client feeling their best, both inside and out.
I’m especially proud of our Petal Soft facial care line, which has become our best-seller, and the loyal community we’ve built together. For potential clients or followers, I’d want you to know that my work is fueled by a genuine love for helping people feel beautiful, balanced, and supported in their journey to wellness.
Tonic Spatique isn’t just a spa; it’s a sanctuary—a place to find connection, calm, and the confidence that comes with knowing you’re cared for.
