We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kate Morgan. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kate below.
Kate, appreciate you joining us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I dub Morgan Publicity the ‘Accidental PR Firm’. I was so burned out from my previous PR role, that after making the decision to leave – I just wanted a client or two to ‘keep the lights on’ and allow for a little (read: much needed!) rest bite.
But I killed it for them ‘keep the lights on’ clients – haha! And they recommended clients. And these clients recommended clients. Before I knew it, I had a boutique firm that steamrolled fairly quickly.
This time was going to be a different PR experience to the last: I wanted to lay the foundations of a PR firm that has soul (that’s our official hashtag!). This means we have a strong no ‘di$^head policy’. This applies to everyone: from the hiring process, to the client vetting process. If we get a sense ‘they seem like a bit of di$^’ – we won’t be working together. This approach seems to be on the money: most of our current client roster have been with us for years and years, as has our staff. Turn over is very low on all fronts. You really don’t need to be mean or ‘have boss bitch’ mentality to get ahead. It is such a tired narrative that I can’t stand. Work hard, be nice, get results: you don’t need to be mean to accomplish this.
Morgan Publicity case studies for brands in the health, wellness and lifestyle space are truly remarkable, I am so proud of everyone involved in every step of this journey. We have turned start-ups into legacy brands, worked with Government officials, generated exceptional placements, brand partnerships – the list goes on! In the ten years Morgan Publicity has been operating, we are not slowing down anytime soon!
Go us!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I grew up in England, and I stem from very humble roots. Anything I have ever wanted in life, I have always worked hard for it, I have had a super strong work ethic from the jump. I remember I was 11 when I got my first Saturday job at the local hair salon, I told a little lie as I think you had to be 13 to be hired, but I wanted to work so badly! My role was to sweep hair, wash hair, answer the phones for appointment bookings. I think I was paid 15 pounds sterling (lol) for 9 hours labor. That to me was a lot of money. I always saved it too! I think my love for the beauty industry was born here.
Later, living in London, I interned anywhere and everywhere I could. I wasn’t paid, but I was determined and scrappy. I took on evening and weekend jobs to ensure I could get by. I interned at some of the most well-known publications, and thought I wanted to be a journalist. Then I had a chance meeting with a PR and the rest as they say is history. I was offered an entry level role at a London PR Firm and that set me on my path!
During my tenure in London, I oversaw PR efforts for some of the biggest names in the beauty industry. I loved every second of it, and some of my closet contacts today are still alive and well from this moment in my career and life journey.
I would eventually move to Los Angeles. I worked for some major brands in the US, but after a period of time, I came to the conclusion I needed to step back and regroup. That’s when my accidental PR Firm would be born! LA based, but with global reach!
Morgan Publicity excels at traditional editorial, influencer, celebrity, events, branding, copy writing – we like to feel like we are an extension to our clients in house team.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
To this day, every client we have is not from cold pitching or spray and pray outreach. It’s all been word of mouth, or from potential clients seeing interviews (such as this one!), and curious brands reaching out directly.
I believe if you work hard, work smart, and generate the results, you’re going to keep your clients happy. Happy clients refer business, and for this, I’m really grateful and appreciate it.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
In 2017 I found out I was pregnant. I didn’t anticipate at the start of my pregnancy journey I would be entering motherhood as a solo parent. I didn’t take a maternity leave, I went back to work five days after I gave birth. I had to. I explained to my clients my situation, with this fear many would leave. None of them did.
I worked harder than I have ever worked in my life. Between diaper changes, feeding, etc, I was hustling for my brands. When baby would sleep at night, I’d fire my laptop back up and craft pitches. I really was the definition of learning and embracing ‘resilience’ during this time period.
My business had a growth year, the year I became a mother. And the year after that. And the pattern has continued. I refused to sink into victim mentality and channeled every ounce of my being into my son, and my other baby – Morgan Publicity.
Looking back with hindsight, and now with a husband and beautiful blended family and a career that I am so proud of – damn I am glad I took the road of ‘lets crack on’ vs. the alternative.
