We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kate Hutson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kate, appreciate you joining us today. Can you tell us about an important lesson you learned while working at a prior job?
One lesson I learned at a prior job is that I cannot be a people-pleaser if I want to be an exceptional leader.
In my teens and 20s, I, like many other women, struggled with being a people-pleaser. For years, I only felt confident or worthy if I had external validation from my boss, my colleagues, my boyfriend, my parents, or my friends. I wanted approval from others to feel happy. My people pleasing undermined my ability to make clear decisions because I was focused on what would please others, rather than looking at the big picture and what was most important. The demands and desires of other people were consuming me.
Some tough situations at work made me realize how bad my people-pleasing was. I was taking on too much and was spread too thin because I kept saying “yes” to helping other people, taking on new projects, and wanting to impress others. I had to learn to draw boundaries and stop putting my need for approval above my own joy (and sanity). I now identify as a recovering people pleaser, but I still have to check myself sometimes.
Once I got my people-pleasing under control, I began to truly excel as a leader, which allowed me to achieve great success in my career and my personal life. I now coach my clients in this area so they too can stop their people-pleasing tendencies and focus on what will truly bring them the greatest success and fulfillment.
Kate, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
When I was in my 20s, I took on a leadership position at a new, full-time job, I was given a wide range of responsibilities, which included executing the annual sales and marketing plan, developing and implementing a robust customer retention plan, and hiring and supervising dozens of employees.
Through my experience at this organization, I grew into a confident and effective leader. I took bold risks in regards to our sales and marketing plan, which resulted in us reaching revenue numbers we had never seen before. I boosted our customer retention rates to unprecedented numbers. In the 5 years I worked in this role, I grew immensely and developed a mindset and attitude of courageous leadership.
Flash forward to 2020, the year that changed everything. After years of passionate work as a leader, teacher, coach, and mentor, I realized it was time to turn my passion and experience in leadership into practical knowledge for the real world– skills that women can use in their everyday lives to help them gain confidence, develop leadership skills, and achieve their personal and professional goals.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The best source of new clients for me is referrals from current or former clients who have worked directly with me. When someone has a fantastic experience working with me– when she achieves huge results, transforms her career, and becomes the most confident version of her– she wants to share it with the world. By creating a raving fan, I know I will get referrals from my clients. They share their personal stories of transformation with their friends, family, and colleagues. It’s those first-hand testimonials that really show people the specifics of what coaching can do for them and their career.
Because referrals are the best source of new clients for me, I spend a lot of time focusing on how to make my coaching as effective and valuable for my clients as possible. Through private coaching, there is a high level of 1-on-1 support and accountability that is specifically tailored for an individual’s unique goals, needs, and desires. This is ultimately what leads to my clients achieving the success they desire. With that success, word-of-mouth referrals start flowing in.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Building my audience on social media has happened gradually over time. Initially, I wanted to be all over every platform- Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, SnapChat, TikTok, Clubhouse, etc., but I simply didn’t have the bandwidth to do every platform and do them well. I began to focus on just 2 platforms: Instagram and LinkedIn. My advice to those just starting to build a social media presence is to focus on 1-2 platforms, rather than all of them. From there, focus on positing quality content consistently. Commit to how often you want to show up on social media. If it’s just twice a week, that’s fine! Commit to posting twice a week and do it consistently. That’s better than posting 6 times in 1 week and then disappearing for 3 weeks. Consistency is king. Lastly, you need to repeat yourself. When creating social media content, it’s okay to say the same thing over and over. It takes your audience a long time to gain full knowledge about your product or service. The more you can repeat yourself and share the same information about your business, the better understanding your audience will have of what you’re offering.
