We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kate Fisher. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kate below.
Hi Kate, thanks for joining us today. Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.
I don’t know if it was a particular moment, but more of a time in my life when I was just like, it’s time to do this. I had been an employee in the same field, working at the same establishment for most of my career. It was great for me at the time. A young woman just starting out. Then I had a baby at 25 and wanted to devote most of my time to him, so having a simpler work life made more sense. It wasn’t until I got a little older and my son was older that I started seriously thinking about starting my own business. The idea of creating the space I envisioned was energizing. The idea of being free to make my own schedule and not ask anyone for persimmon for anything was exciting. A stretch of buildings were being remodeled just a couple blocks from my house, with suits available. I decided to take a peek and after months of deliberation I signed a lease! Funny enough it was February 2020 and the whole world shut down a month later:) I went through with it and opened a skin care business in the middle of a pandemic! I have to say it’s been great!
Kate, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I always had a passion for skin care. Growing up I had challenging skin and was always trying to figure out how to treat it. Flowing into the skin care business just seemed natural. As I’ve gotten older I’ve really focused on treating aging skin naturally. Whether it’s products, treatments, massage techniques, usually all of the above. Most of my clientele are 35 plus so that is also their main interest. Keeping that healthy glow, without going to extremes. I call it gentle aging.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
You know I try to be real and genuine with my clients. So it probably starts there. I want them to look forward to waking into my door and feel great when they walk out. The skin care market is always changing and I pride myself on continuing to learn and even shift my thoughts at times. I also feel I have very intuitive skill which helps me stay on track and not give into every novelty that comes around.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
You really need to be organized and tactful when running a business. Setting systems in place. Always making sure your client knows what to expect, from the time they book their appointment to the time they are checking out. For example always making sure you have appointments booked correctly and making sure it’s for the right amount of time so that nobody is waiting or rushed. Consistency.
