Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kate Decosta Engler. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Kate , thanks for joining us today. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
My health coaching story begins when I was in my late 20s. After a series of failed toxic relationships, I found myself dealing with some pretty uncomfortable and embarrassing digestive issues that kept getting worse despite me eating “healthier”. Doctors couldn’t figure out what my issues were so I set out on a quest to figure it out myself. After discovering my previously unknown food sensitivities, I researched gut health and how it affects people (especially their moods) for over a decade. I had been an esthetician by trade for over 20 years but during Covid, I seized my opportunity and went back to school to pursue my other passion and got certified as a health coach. I have been touting the importance of a healthy gut on your overall well-being ever since.

Kate , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a certified Health Coach as well as a Reiki Master and Master Aesthetician with over 20 years experience in the spa and wellness industry. I recognized from my own major struggles with digestive and mental health issues just how important gut health, nutrition, and stress-management are. Those struggles are why I now empower and guide people, especially women, in making healthy day-to-day choices in these areas leading to an overall healthier existence. I recently wrote a book, “Gut Feelings”, as well as a 30-day online program, The Healthier & Happier Gut Academy, which shed light on the importance of gut health and its connection to mood issues, the brain, and other bodily systems providing strategies to optimize all. I believe health isn’t just some end goal but a lifestyle that will lead to a more fulfilling, happier life and I am passionate about helping people attain their goals.

If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
If I could go back in time, I would absolutely still choose the same professions. Starting out as an esthetician led me to the path of health coach and reiki master. And if I am honest, I am most happy when I get to do a blend of all three in my life. In fact, I still work per diem as an esthetician because I love making people feel good about themselves. And that passion started my reiki journey as I completed level I while working full-time in a spa almost 20 years ago. I also had the opportunity of working for an Eastern European woman who made her own skincare products and learned so much about herbs and alternative skin remedies. This piqued my interest in utilizing natural and holistic remedies to support my health and well-being.

Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
I think being approachable and “real” is very important especially in this day and age of influencers and AI. One of the things that makes me a great coach is that I have been there. I have true understanding as only someone who’s been through it too will have and I am open about my struggles so my clients know they are not alone in theirs. Having many different life experiences allows me to have compassion and empathy while also empowering clients with tools to take control of their lives and health.
