We were lucky to catch up with Kate Crawford recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kate, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
I love a good story and have always been drawn to the mythology surrounding Persephone. On one level, it’s an awful story of rape, control, violence and abuse which leads to Persephone becoming the Queen of the Underworld. However, Persephone (who was referred to as Kore; which translates to heart) was also revered as the Goddess of Spring. She was ALSO the personification of growth! Part of the beauty that is Persephone, in my opinion, is that she fully embodied this duality.
So much of the healing work I do with clients within my business is leading them through the “darker” aspects of their being; the trauma, the powerful emotions, the crazy patterns and dynamics that are subscribed to at a very early age in order to receive love. It’s within moving through the shadow side of being in a human body that we get to fully experience the growth, bounty and love that is always available to us.
And so, Korē Breathwork was born!

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Kate Crawford and I’m a licensed Physical Therapist and a Certified Trauma-Informed Breathwork Practitioner. I started my business, Korē Breathwork, in 2021. Leading up to that time, I was working full time in the public health system in Canada. The pandemic was completely burning me out on all levels. I had chronic pain, daily migraines and debilitating anxiety. I was also growing tired of the “fix me” mentality of healthcare, especially when it came to physical rehabilitation. Around this same time, I was starting to play around with bringing awareness to my breath in an attempt to regulate my nervous system. This led me conscious connected breathing. Once I started diving into the modality of circular breathing, I was hooked! It was what was missing in my own healing journey as well as from a professional capacity.
Korē Breathwork started as a way for my Physical Therapy clients to gain a deeper understanding around the energetic and emotional components of why pain continued to show up in their body. Over the evolution of this beautiful business, this has transformed into what I like to call, The Secret Language of The Body! I truly believe that the physical body is the Higher Self and it speaks to you from this perspective. With this in mind, I guide clients to bridging the gap between how they are feeling and what the body is actually communicating! I facilitate this by combining my impressive knowledge of the human body with breathwork + energy work and I have developed my own trauma tools for uncovering/understanding how our familial and ancestral trauma shows up the body.
When you are no longer literally weighed down by these energetic attachments and stuck emotional energy you gain full agency and control over how you FEEL in your body! There is a new found trust in moving forward in you life and you gain a new awareness in how to listen to the clear and precise next steps to take in your life! This level of clarity is priceless in my opinion and it is at THE ROOT of understanding this beautiful language of love and support.
I offer virtual and in-person, 1:1 + group support for decoding the secret language of your body. It’s a journey that is unique and individual to each human body!
I’m so proud of all of the work I have done in creating a really safe space for people to have their own, authentic human experience. It gets to be messy and complicated and filled with beautiful emotions + experiences. I love being able to remind other humans that it gets to be a privilege to be in a human body…not a burden!

How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
I had gone through a divorce a year or so before starting my business and in a shocking turn of events for everyone in my life at that time (including myself), I decided not to stay in our family home. This was just before the pandemic hit and instead, I moved myself and my 2 young kiddos in with my parents. It ended up being the perfect way to ride out the initial phases of the pandemic and used the money I saved from the move + sale of the house to the father of my children, to start my business.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Word of mouth – This absolutely rings true for the longer term, 1:1 clients I have/had. This has translated to the online space I provide as well as in-person work/sessions.
PR/Podcasts – I LOVE talking about my business and the way I have shifted into working with clients. I love the audience reach that is provided with publications, interviews and podcasts! I have worked with clients from all over the world! The connections and communities that you discover through these mediums is just priceless.
