We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kate Compton. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kate below.
Hi Kate, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The most meaningful project I’ve had the privilege to work on recently is a short film titled “Peanut Butter Shot,” which I produced in collaboration with my wife, the writer and director, Paige Compton. This project holds special significance due to its unique backstory, context, and personal connection.
Our journey with “Peanut Butter Shot” began with an incredible opportunity – funding from Disney’s Underrepresented Storytellers Initiative, in partnership with the American Film Institute. The initiative’s aim is to amplify diverse voices and stories, and we were thrilled to be a part of it.
The film’s narrative revolves around a daydreaming army sergeant who musters up the courage to ask out her medic crush, only to have her plans disrupted by the intricacies of the military medical system. “Peanut Butter Shot” is a female-led story with a quirky, queer comedic twist, inspired by my wife Paige’s personal experiences during her time in the army.
What makes this project particularly meaningful is the blend of personal and professional elements. It’s a reflection of our own lives and experiences, and it allowed us to share our unique story with the world. The film not only explores themes of love and identity but also sheds light on the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals within the military.
The timing of the Disney grant added an extra layer of excitement and adventure to this project. Just a week before our planned trip to Antarctica, we received the grant approval. Rather than letting this opportunity slip by, we decided to embark on a once-in-a-lifetime journey to the icy continent.
During our 14-day cruise to Antarctica, we made the most of our time by prepping for the film as much as possible. It was an adventure in itself, from the mesmerizing landscapes of Ushuaia to the breathtaking beauty of Antarctica. We even took the plunge and eloped in Antarctica, making our personal journey an integral part of the film’s narrative.
Upon our return, we hit the ground running, successfully shooting the film and ensuring it was presented right on schedule. The film became a testament to our love, our unique experiences, and our dedication to storytelling.
Following the completion of “Peanut Butter Shot,” we had our official wedding ceremony in Los Angeles, celebrating our love and commitment to each other. This project not only allowed us to share our personal journey but also to create a meaningful piece of art that reflects our passion for storytelling and advocacy for underrepresented voices in the industry.
Kate, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I come from a family deeply rooted in entrepreneurship, and I’ve always had a passion for both business and filmmaking. My journey into the world of film and TV production started with the realization that filmmaking is a business in itself. I’ve worn multiple hats in this industry, primarily working as an assistant director and producer, where I’ve had the privilege of contributing to the production side of projects.
What truly excites me in my career is my dedication to initiatives supporting minority, female, and LGBTQ+ stories within the film industry. This passion is deeply personal for me, as I belong to this very community. I believe in not only telling these stories but also in creating more opportunities for individuals within these groups. Representation matters, and by actively promoting diversity and inclusion, I hope to see more talented individuals from these communities thrive in the industry.
The type of work I provide primarily centers around film and TV production, where I aim to amplify underrepresented voices and stories. I’m proud of the projects I’ve been a part of that have not only entertained but also shed light on important social and cultural issues. It’s incredibly rewarding to see the impact these stories can have and to witness the growth of the talented individuals involved.
What sets me apart is my unwavering commitment to championing diversity and inclusivity in the industry. I believe that by doing so, we can create a more vibrant, dynamic, and representative landscape that better reflects the richness of human experiences. My work isn’t just about filmmaking; it’s about making a positive change and contributing to a more inclusive world.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
In my experience, around 98% of my new opportunities have come from recommendations by people I’ve previously worked with. This is a testament to the value of consistently delivering exceptional results on every project. When you go the extra mile and consistently do a good job, people are not only satisfied but also eager to refer you to others in their network.
It’s important to note that not every project or team interaction is smooth sailing. There will be instances where challenges arise, and individuals may be difficult to work with. However, my approach has always been to persevere and give my best effort. Even when faced with challenging situations, I believe in maintaining professionalism and delivering quality work.
Sometimes, those difficult clients or collaborators may not immediately express their appreciation, but in the long run, they often come to recognize and value the dedication and commitment I put into our projects. This approach not only brings in new clients but also strengthens the relationships with existing ones, ultimately contributing to long-term success in my industry.
Any advice for managing a team?
It is essential to lead by example. I firmly believe that doing your best in everything you work on sets the tone for the entire team. When your team sees your commitment and dedication, it inspires them to give their best effort as well. Positivity is contagious.
Equally important is demonstrating kindness and empathy towards your team members. It’s not just about the work they produce; it’s about recognizing them as individuals with their own lives and challenges. Showing that you genuinely care for your team, both professionally and personally, creates a supportive and positive work environment. When people feel valued and understood, they are more likely to be motivated and engaged in their tasks.
