Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kate Bandmann. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kate , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Is there a heartwarming story from your career that you look back on?
Over the past decade that I’ve worked in this field I have had countless heartwarming moments with colleagues and clients. A recent one that I know will stand out to me for a long time was when a client was sharing their feedback about therapy. They expressed that they were feeling more content than they had ever believed possible. I’ve heard this sentiment before and it always warms my heart because I can personally relate to that feeling of achieving things you never considered possible for yourself. It is encouraging as a therapist and a beautiful thing to witness. I feel so privileged to be able to observe the change and progress in those I work with.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I consider my pathway into this work to be a result of divine intervention. What I mean by this, is that when I chose to pursue becoming a therapist I had little understanding of what therapy actually was. I based my decision upon my values, the primary one being that I wanted to pursue a career where I helped people. I feel very lucky that it turned out to be the right fit for me. Training to be a therapist also became the gateway to me accessing my own therapy (which I didn’t know how much I needed). It not only led to a fulfilling career but completely transformed my personal life in the best way.
Over the years my role, the modalities I practice, and the areas I focus on have shifted. Presently, I offer online therapy for people wanting to address issues with anxiety, self-doubt, shame, trauma, and who feel stuck within patterns and cycles that don’t best serve them. The modalities I use most are EMDR, hypnotherapy and somatic psychotherapy. I integrate the teachings of CBT, mindfulness, and positive psychology.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
Learning not to take things personally. I believe this skill is essential for providing effective therapy. It is one I am grateful to have as I believe it has strengthened all of my relationships, professional and personal.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The most effective way for growing my clientele has been networking with other professionals in my field and from clients passing on my information to their own communities. I’m grateful to have a range of ways clientele connect with me but the most consistent is definitely through word of mouth. My advice would be to form connections with others in your field and let them get to know you so that they can make aligned referrals.
